WASHINGTON Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell warned on Friday that GOP senators will not vote to increase the government's borrowing limit unless President Barack Obama agrees to rein in Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, laying down a high-stakes marker just weeks before the debt ceiling is reached.
In an interview with The Associated Press, McConnell complained that Obama has refused his offers both public and private to work on a bipartisan plan to tackle the nation's massive benefit programs, which threaten to overwhelm the budget in coming years.
"There will be no entitlement reform without President Obama," McConnell said. "It cannot be done without him, will not be done without him."

You wanna cut? We’ll show you cuts. That seems to be the new mantra Democrats have adopted in response to the GOP’s assault on spending. Dems this week have suggested expanding the debate from discretionary spending to taking on all of the sacred cows: farm subsidies, Medicare, Medicaid, taxes and the Pentagon. Well, almost all. What’s missing? Social Security.
If the GOP votes to increase the debt limit without spending cuts, ALL of them need to be voted out of office!
Its obvious cutting even one dollar is Kryptonite to him.
... or maybe Wolfbane is more appropriate.
It really doesn’t help that when our guys are trying to do the right thing, and in return we attack them.
Bravo, Senator McConnell. We are with you on this!
KA-POW! and BAM!
That is a smack down “all in” for McConnell. Where did he get a spine?
Obama needs the money for Holders’ “my people” tribes.
Obama said he and Congress should address the nation’s long-term fiscal condition and programs such as Medicaid and Medicare after lawmakers complete a deal on spending for the current fiscal year.
After? After lawmakers complete a deal on spending? You might as well say “never”.
Amen to that. Doesn't matter...they'll get bashed regardless.
Good that there are people out there like you who are seeing the positive progress taking place.
This is a real character test for the Republicans in Congress and the Senate. The question is, quite simply:
What is more important to you; your political career and the next election, or the fate of the country?
Why not cut worthless government spending.
Homeland Security. Worthless waste of money.
EPA. Worthless waste of money.
UN spending. Worthless waste of money.
Foreign Aid to Hostile Nations. Worthless waste of money.
Government employee salaries. Worthless waste of money.
Lawmakers and staff’s salaries. Worthless waste of money.
DEA. Worthless waste of money.
ATF. Worthless waste of money.
Presidential Vacations. Worthless waste of money.
Since obviously no one is going to kick all the illegals out of the country, Why not collect taxes, back taxes, and seize half the money that is sent from illegal labor in the US to Mexico (If that money is a large portion of the Mexican economy, why don’t we take it for ourselves?)
Why hold illegals for months on end wasting more money instead of sending them back home immediately. Jails make more money federally holding illegals in them, (and they get treated better than our own AMERICAN prisoners)
Tax items from China.
Legalize drugs and tax them. (Before I’m jumped for suggesting taxes, might I remind everyone that this country as always been taxed - that was the first true test of Federal power)
Their is so much waste, and yet, now suddenly, we are trying to get rid of SS, medicare, and medicaid. Stupid.
Everyone suggesting getting rid of SS, Medicare and Medicaid is nearing the end of their lives so it wont affect them, or it just does not affect them to begin with.
Thats the winning spirit!
Sooner or later Social Security benefits will have to be cut.
THERE IS NO MORE MONEY!!!!!
Baby boomers are retiring and the generation behind it(Gen X) is half the size of the boomers. There will not be enough tax payers to fund Social Security at it’s present rate.
3,2,1....
They should just pay off the old folks and let the kids get a better plan.
Social Security can NOT be cut you morons. There is nothing there but IOU’s. The Government musts be forces to pay back, in addition to the debt, and quit borrowing everything that goes into the fund. If all of the money that was SUPOSED to be in the fund were invested wisely, there would be plenty to go around. Over 14 percent of your earnings go into that fund (half from the worker and half from the employer).
