No, it doesn’t sound good at all. As soon after the quake that the wave hit, I doubt many people were able to get out of there. That water was full of buildings in the footage I’ve seen. It looked like the coast was scrubbed clean.
They were just showing on Fox that the tidal waves are higher than some of the Pacific islands. The death toll is going to be inconceivable before this is over with, I’m afraid.
I have to keep reminding myself this isn’t Hollywood. It’s so hard to believe anything on this scale could happen.
It looks like the epicenter was about 130 km from the coast. It probably wasn’t quite at max speed (900 km/hour), but if it was it would have hit the coast in less than 9 minutes. Just about the time you would have stumbled out of your damaged building and thinking about that, rather than the tsunami.
