A very viable and sustainable view of what the tribulation in the Book of Revelation is all about is analogous to what the Book of Joshua is all about: possessing the land. In Joshua, Israel went in to disinherit the enemy and possess that which God had give to Israel. In Revelation, God Himself is dispossessing the earth of His enemies (including Babylon, etc.) and taking possession of it as King of Kings and Lord of Lords. Man has not, can not, and will not do this. God Himself will do this in His time.
In the meantime, we are engaged in the same effort but on a much smaller scale - redeeming the time and souls as God gives us grace to do so.
