Editorial: Wisconsin’s Walker Has His PATCO Moment

Labor Relations: The media and the unions screamed to keep the bankrupt status quo in Wisconsin, but the newly elected governor refused to bend or break under the pressure. At last, a real lesson in leadership.

We're tempted to call Gov. Scott Walker's courage Reaganesque. Remember the Patco strike of 1981? The air traffic controllers' union had walked out, illegally shutting down the nation's air transportation system. Their attempt at extortion was President Reagan's first big test, and the unions seemed to hold all the cards.

But Reagan held firm. He fired the strikers, hired replacements and, despite claims by unions and their supporters on the left that it would lead to disaster, it didn't.

Wisconsin just had its Patco moment, with Walker outmaneuvering Wisconsin Senate Democrats who illegally departed for Illinois rather than vote on a bill to curb union benefits.

Fed up with the Democrats' no-show tactics, Walker on Wednesday night used a perfectly legal parliamentary maneuver to get a vote — treating the measure as a stand-alone bill — and won. On Thursday, the bill passed the state Assembly by 53-42.

Walker did it, as he wrote in the Wall Street Journal, for the "countless taxpayers who want us to balance our budgets and, more importantly, to make government work for each of them." To which we say, Amen.

Thanks very much for your suggestion, but I'll stick with another proven leader, Sarah Palin!

If the roles were reversed where TP folks were storming the Capital, and similar allegations of threats were made against Democrats, I bet the Democrats would have called in the National Guard.

I noticed on Megan Kelly’s show today, an associate of Chuck Schumer described the magnificent power held by the protesting unions, and he commented without being prompted that the union members across the nation would effectively dominate the Tea Party crowd in terms of force — his wording could be characterized as fightin’ words, but words nonetheless of ignorance.

It’s disturbing how many Communistic minded folks exist in this Country.

This is a first step in culling the honest citizen from the communist unions.

from the bill

UNION DUES ARE NOW VOLUNTARY

from the bill

UNIONS MUST VOTE EVERY YEAR TO STAY IN EXISTENCE!!!!

The only unions exempt for benefits negotiations are police and fire fighters.

We can only pray this will dismantle the communists from the government.

How do we spread this to other states?

(BTW florida just passed a teacher union bill that gutted that union too!)

When it concerns taxpayer dollars, collective bargaining should probably be illegal since taxpayers are forced effectively through threat of imprisonment to fund union interests. The private sector provides a natural balance where the consumer has the choice to support a particular union shop excluding the fascist cases such as GM and the egregious bailout subsidy. So, I have no problem with collective bargaining in the private sector providing the absence of illegalities, thuggery, and taxpayer-funded bailouts.

If the unions eventually win this, taxpayers will be the new serfs.

>>>How do we spread this to other states?<<<

Already the law in Alaska. The Union That Supposedly Represents Me can’t extort $780 out of my wallet annually to support leftwing hacks and Democrats. At our school district, I’d estimate 85 percent of the teachers are NOT part of the union. As a result, the NEA is forced to run ads on television showing American flags and soaring eagles to fool the citizens that they’re good, patriotic folks. The good news is that those of us actually in the classroom and “represented” by these maroons get to see what is really going on, and we vote with our checkbook.

See what happens in Wisconsin. I’ll bet they’ll see the same kind of huge decline in NEA membership next year. That $1,000 annual fee down there could be better spent on repairing the boat for fishing season.

Draft Walker!

I'm with you.
Did you happen to see Walker's press conference following the ceremonial signing today? This guy never caved, never apologized, and never pandered. Yes, he has "Presidential timber" written all over him.

Walker signs bill, takes questions, stands tall
