These "eco bulbs" last a fraction of the time you are used to having a large flourescent tube last. In fact, the eco bulbs don't last much longer than standard incandescent bulbs.

Get over it!You like being told what to do, what to buy, how to use it, what you can do in your own home?
The point is not the bulb, its the direct invasion of you rights on a small scale that will only get bigger.
It's time to draw a line, even over a stupid light bulb.

I hope that you’re kidding, Sam. By mandating CFL’s the problem of mercury disposal is exponentially worse. From what I see these CFL’s don’t last much longer than the incandescent bulbs they are to replace. Another government promise that didn’t pan out.

Forty eight years ago we used to take the florescent bulbs to the local trash dump (remember them?) and toss them just to watch them disentegrate! Great fun throwing away twenty at a time over several years!
BUT NOW, the company I worked for has a very tight HAZMAT requirements and all burned out cfl bulbs are stored till they can be disposed in a proper manner by getting them hauled away as ....HAZARDOUS WASTE.
They also have an emergency proceedure if one breaks, along with lots of Mercury clean up kits.

sam_paine,
The difference is that the new ones are all made in China, the land of quality fade which puts plastic left over from manufacturing into pet food, antifreeze into cough medicine and tooth paste, and lots of cadmium and mercury into children's toys and jewelery.
