The US must preserve the domestic food production. I'm not sure what is the best way to do this, but this isn't an area for pure global competition market forces.

The US must preserve the domestic food production. I'm not sure what is the best way to do this, but this isn't an area for pure global competition market forces. If you are going to go the protectionist route, tariffs do more for keeping internal market forces healthy than subsidies do. They are far simpler and work at a macro level, vice trying to micromangage production.
Of course tariffs cause many unentended consequences at the macro level.
