Democratic Sen. Patrick Leahy warned late Monday that the White House’s order on renewing Guantanamo Bay military commissions will jeopardize the closing of the prison that President Obama has promised to shutter.
In a statement released in the evening, Leahy, the chairman of the Judiciary Committee, said Obama’s executive order “has done little to change” the damage that the Guantanamo prison has had on the American judicial system.
“The process outlined in the Executive Order falls far short of core constitutional values by failing to provide judicial review of cases considered by the review board or guaranteeing meaningful assistance of counsel,” he said. “I am also concerned that these orders do little to bring us closer to closing the prison at Guantanamo Bay.”
Still, Leahy said he wants “very much” to work with the White House “to resolve the detainee situation at Guantanamo Bay.”
But Leahy’s sharp dissent with Obama signals that the administration is likely to face questions over its terrorism policy from members of the president’s own party who are seeking to make the closure of the prison a more urgent priority.
“I believe we must charge suspects and bring them to trial, not establish a new system that contemplates indefinite detention,” Leahy said in his statement.
