Kind of like when PETA tried to get the town of Fishkill, NY to change it's name. I think they offered them quite a bit of money if they would.

They were politely informed that "kill" is Dutch for "river." At that point, they decided that "elsewhere" seemed like an excellent place to be.

Along with Peekskill and Catskill, it was the Dutch (Henry Hudson) who first explored the Hudson River.
