Can’t blame emotions for running high in the circumstances. There were several documented instances of pilots being beaten to death by civilian mobs when they were forced down during WWII, even in Britain.
The pilots carried pistols, not so much to fight their way back to friendly lines, as to keep the civilian lynch mobs at bay until soldiers could arrive to take them into custody...
