71% Believe Government Workers Get Better Pensions Than Those In Private Sector
Rasmussen Reports ^ | March 4,2011 | Scott Rasmussen

Posted on 03/04/2011 9:09:38 AM PST by Hojczyk

Most voters believe those who work for the government get better retirement benefits than those who work for private companies and also think it’s unlikely their state can afford the benefits given to state workers.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 71% of Likely U. S. Voters feel that, generally speaking, government workers get better pensions than private sector workers. Only 14% disagree, while slightly more (15%) are not sure. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

However, just 32% of all voters say it’s at least somewhat likely that their state will be able to afford all the pension benefits it has promised to state workers while 56% say it’s not likely. Those figures include 8% who say it is Very Likely and 16% who say it is Not At All Likely.

Voters strongly believe that government workers should wait until around age 65 to begin collecting full pension benefits. If someone joins the police force at age 20 and stays for 25 years, only 28% believe that person should receive a full pension for life at age 45. Sixty-one percent (61%) think they should find another job and wait until they retire at around age 65 to receive the full pension from their police work.

Similarly, if someone becomes a teacher right out of college and stays for 30 years until they retire, just 36% say they should receive their full pension for life at that time. Fifty-six percent (56%), however, say they should find another job and wait until they retire around age 65 to get their full teaching pension.

Most Americans continue to believe government workers also have more job security than those in the private sector and that they don’t work as hard as private sector workers.

71% of us resent that we pay taxes to fund their pensions while trying to fund our own pensions with whatever is left over.

Tax the excess benifits the union workers receive over and above those received in the public sector to get some of the money back. The demons love taxes so much give them one. If BO wants to tax those of us that have cadilac healthcare then he should have no gripe about taxing cadilac benefits union members receive.

It should be a MORAL, ETHICAL, and ILLEGAL "Conflict of Interest" to have public sector unions because....

- Unions in the private sector don't CAMPAIGN / SUPPORT / PAY to select WHO they "NEGOTIATE" with.

- Unions in the public sector DO CAMPAIGN / SUPPORT / PAY to select WHO (Politicians/GOVT) they "NEGOTIATE" with.

A case should and MUST be made to BAN and OUTLAW all PUBLIC employee collective bargaining in United States!

If 71% Believe Government Workers Get Better Pensions Than Those In Private Sector, Then 29% of the Population Must Work for the Government.

Then 29% must not know what a pension is. I don't know too many companies offering pensions these days.

And these same polls would have us believe 60% of the people are good with it.

This is all Kafkaesque.

Does $3,295.00 dollars a month seem excessive to the widow of a slain policeman seem excessive? For the rest of her life?

After all our military does get a total of $1000 a month for 10 years and then out in the street? Guess my wife was stupid to marry me she should have found herself a policeman to marry

To get agreement from 71% of likely voters in any poll today is a huge margin.

I really believe you could ask a question “Should we stuff Jews in ovens?” and you would get 15% strongly agree. There really are that many stupid people around. And they vote.

But this tells me that the fights in Wisconsin, Ohio & Indiana have strong national support. I hope the elected officials there are paying attention.

Not only is it damn excessive, I have never figured out why cops don’t work until they are sixty five. That needs to be changed and made retro active. They don’t need to be cops just transfer them over to driving garbage trucks until they are 65.

It is so sickening the arrogance of these jealous old fools who made the choice to make riches on the outside and since the job market fell through they suddenly feel it is unfair. Disgusting to the core.

“Dodging the bill-The great public-sector pension rip-off”
From The Economist print edition
July 9, 2009

JOIN a private-sector company these days and you will be very lucky if you get a pension linked to your final salary. In Britain almost three out of four companies that retain such schemes have closed them to new employees. The cost of paying such benefits, which are partly linked to inflation and offer payouts to surviving spouses, is simply too high now that many retirees are surviving into their 80s.
Yet most new public-sector employees in Britain and America continue to benefit from pensions linked to their salaries. The pension costs facing the public sector are roughly the same as those facing the private sector; their employees are likely to live just as long. But because of the presumed largesse of future taxpayers, governments seem under much less pressure to reduce their pension costs. In 2005 a reform package in Britain raised the retirement age for new state employees, but still left existing employees able to retire at 60.
http://www.economist.com/opinion/displaystory.cfm?story_id=13988606

Perhaps the real reason why public-sector pension costs have not been tackled is that the full bill has never been revealed to taxpayers.
