SILVERDALE A Central Kitsap man brought a grenade to the Silverdale precinct of the Kitsap County Sheriff's Office Tuesday afternoon, prompting a short closure while the device was removed.
The man told deputies he found the World War II-era ("pineapple style") grenade recently when sorting through the belongings of his recently deceased father. He brought it to the sheriff's office to have it properly disposed of.
At about 2 p.m., the office was cleared out and parking lot blocked off so sheriff's deputies could determine what to do with the device. A deputy and a Washington State Patrol trooper, both members of the county's bomb squad, took it to a firing range where it was "rendered safe" with an explosive charge.
Deputies gave the man some instructions for the future.

Pull the pin, throw it as hard as you can and run like h3ll in the opposite direction.
I wonder what the desk officer thought he set that on the counter before he started to talk.
That picture would have been priceless.
Dang. Somebody had a fun day.
It’s only got a 10 meter kill radius.
Maybe they all throw like girls and can’t get it past 10 meters.
I would have loved to have been a fly on that wall:
"How about the crack house on 12th street...."
LOL... Sheriff Boyer was at our Silverdale Chamber of Commerce lunch last week... will have to rib him about this at next month’s luncheon.
Sgt.: Run for it.
Jones: You could stand and scream for help.
Sgt.: Yeah, you try that with a pineapple down your windpipe.
Jones: A pineapple?
Sgt.: Where? Where?
Jones: No I just said: a pineapple.
Sgt.: Oh. Phew. I thought my number was on that one
LOL, I can’t top that
The PARKING LOT was blocked off??!!!.
What a bunch of over reactionary wusses we’ve all become.
good grief.
Reminds me of what happened a couple of years ago in East Pointe MI. A guy found a pipe bomb and drove it to the police station. After the evacuation of the police station, it was taken away and the police made a statement.
If you find suspicious package, do not move it, We Will Come There!!!
A bit surprised that they did not throw him into jail! Seems to be the default today - when in doubt, don’t think, just do what is required by your bosses or if that fails, go pc...
Kind of surprised that they took him at his word and did not suspect him of nefarious activity.
Take him a pineapple...or at least a can of pineapple chunks or something. :-)
The agents go ape nuts for a few seconds before realizing that there isn't a threat.
Wonder how long it took for him to figure it wasn’t a paperweight?
Great idea... he’s actually a nice guy. That “precinct office” is not much bigger than a porta-potty... just a tiny little building. Silverdale isn’t even an incorporated town (but they’re talking about it).
We havent but LEOs try to make a big deal over shit like this just to justify their position and overly large budgets. Not all mind you but quite a number of departments.I would bet the grenade was inert and if it was live and dangerous it would have most likely gone off some years ago.
Jeezuz! Instead of throwing Chinese fire drill they could have just unscrewed the damn fuze!
Those things were not designed to be tricky.
Of course...it was the political implications that I was addressing... You sir, are way to practical..heh..
I remember from a diagram somewhere that the detonator is lead azide. Wiki says that stays stable in storage.
Then again, the TNT filler doesn’t last forever:
“TNT is prone to exudation of dinitrotoluenes and other isomers of trinitrotoluene. Even small quantities of such impurities can cause such effect. The effect shows especially in projectiles containing TNT and stored at higher temperatures, e.g. during summer. Exudation of impurities leads to formation of pores and cracks (which in turn cause increased shock sensitivity). Migration of the exudated liquid into the fuze screw thread can form fire channels, increasing the risk of accidental detonations; fuze malfunction can result from the liquids migrating into its mechanism.”
