They were both beaten. Clint was beat to death, Judy was beat so badly that when her husband found them he did not know it was his wife until after the police and fire arrived. You have to figure that whoever did this did not intend to leave that 60 something year old woman alive.

Clint was built like a line-backer, he was very athletic so it had to have been more than one person because he if it was only one he would have kicked his ass.
