Pakistan’s hardliners (Bhatti murder and persecution of Christians)

Shahbaz Bhatti, Pakistan’s minister for religious minorities, was a man of exceptional courage. A Christian in an overwhelmingly Muslim land, he knew that his life was in danger, yet he spurned extra security and entreaties to leave the country. Yesterday, he was murdered, almost certainly by Tehreek-e-Taliban. He died for the same cause as Salman Taseer, the governor of the Punjab, who was shot by his bodyguard last month. In both cases, the offence was the same: to have sought the repeal of Pakistan’s notorious blasphemy laws. Mr Bhatti had also offended the hardliners by seeking a presidential pardon for Asiya Noreen, a fellow Roman Catholic sentenced to death for allegedly insulting the Prophet Mohammed.
