OUR VIEW: Hatch looks unserious
The Standard Examiner ^ | 03/02/2011 | Editorial Board

No one should ever accuse Utah's senior U.S. Sen. Orrin Hatch, in office 34 years, of not being a hard worker. But lately, Hatch seems to be expending much of his soon-to-be 77-year-old body and intellect toward a desperate effort to convince a small portion of Utah Republicans that he is Tea Party-approved.

As a result, the distinguished-looking senator is beginning to look very unserious. He's reversed a longstanding tradition of being a conservative statesman with the political skills to work with Democrats to reach compromise. Common-sense positions Hatch once espoused on issues such as immigration and health care reform have been ditched for from-the-larnyx "no's" to stances from the administration. Attempts at compromise that come from the administration are often greeted with derision by Hatch.

Sometimes, the senator sounds more like a "Baghdad Bob"-type shill than a member of the U.S. Senate. He jumped the shark earlier this week when he let loose with a profanity at Utah State University when describing President Barack Obama's health care reform law. You can watch the video here It was embarrassing to watch Hatch use such desperate efforts.

The senator's desperation is due to Utah's nominating procedure, which allows state delegates to winnow candidates down to one or two during convention. The delegates tend to be quite a bit more conservative than the mainstream. Hatch's past efforts at bipartisanship have soured his popularity with many delegates. The senator, mindful that his former colleague, the respected conservative Robert Bennett, was swapped at convention for Tea Party idealogue Mike Lee, is trying to drink the Utah tea as hot and fast as he can.

Small town paper that still doesn't really get it.

Although I am really getting tired of all the email blasts from Hatch lately as he pretends to be a conservative.

“the respected conservative Robert Bennett”

This has got to be satire, right?

He should have the sense to retire. He could practice law, teach, write, any number of things.

That is the reason this was posted in as much as even a newspaper in the most conservative small town in Northern Utah is very unclear on the concept of conservatism.

I only take the paper to read the obituaries every morning. Sometimes their editorials are doozies. Often it seems like one is reading the High School Gazette.

So respected that he came in third place in a vote held among respected conservatives.

I just hope he doesn’t show up down here on July 23 and butt in to our picnic. Only thing that would be worse is that if the MittBot showed up.

Has Hatch reached a final decision as to whom he will support for the republican ticket? The last I read at F.R. it was between Romney and Huntsman.

You should see the letters Hatch has sent his constituents about Obama’s eligibility. They are straight from the DNC and DOJ talking points. DISGUSTING!

With these letters alone he should be fired. Obviously he:

** thinks Utah citizens are stupid.
** has gonads the size of a dust mite.
** has a brain the size of dust mite.

Maybe he'll let me know this week in his tiresome email messages. I will say this on his behalf. Ten years ago we were stalled in getting approval for our 501(c)3. I went to Hatch and explained how important it was for Utah to establish this small museum along Highway 89. We also let him know that he would already have helped if were an LDS project.

Needless to say the approvals went through quickly. I just hope he doesn't show up for the picnic on July 23.

Correct on all counts. I used to cringe at the way he was always kissing Teddy Boy’s ass.

Sorry Utahians, but Hatch is all RINO all the time. Anyone else remember his behavior during the Clinton impeachment?

How much skill does it take to cave in? the political skills to work with Democrats to reach compromise.

I think things were very different back in the olden days for brother Hatch. We need to rid ourselves of every RINO if we expect to get our country back. JFK was more conservative than Hatch.

And yes Hatch will cave. He will even cave on his "Dumb Ass" remarks if he hasn't already. Mark my words.

I remember how Hatch always wanted to kiss the degenerate Ted Kennedy's @ss--always prissily talking about "comity" as if it was the daily new vocabulary word.

What was it about that repulsive, evil man who always attracted a certain type of mealy-mouthed conservative in DC? Look how Bush was always trying to get an invite to Hyannis Port.

I can't tell you how glad I am to be living in the post-Camelot era.

Maybe it was Laura who wanted to hang out with the Kennedy...she's proving to have been kind of a silent hypocrite during her years as FL, as are her margarita-swilling daughters.

Hatch is a wannabe and panderer. There is something in Mormonism genes that causes a type of inferiority complex when they get around the “big boys”.(embarrassment)

Having grown up with it myself, I recognize the symptoms.
I figured it out when I realized in 1968 as a young Xerox salesman in San Francisco that I could break away and excel against all the Harvard and Stanford types. I also saw through the cult control that was trying to hold me back. That is when I left Mormonism.
