He apparently knew the comings and goings of the US personnel from daily observation of the transfer procedures.
He came to the airport armed, with a lot of ammuninition and a knife. Showing up armed by itself leads to intent.
He had a facebook and web presence that was blatanly jihadic.
Luckily, as I said above, the pistol jammed after the first shots or he would have killed more.
