Fred Grandy has informed WMAL of his intention to resign from the station and its morning program, The Grandy Group. Veteran broadcast talent Bryan Nehman will continue to anchor the morning program and in the interim will be joined by several notable guest hosts and regular contributors. The stations morning show will also continue to provide the latest news, traffic and weather reports to its audience.
WMAL remains committed to its goal of providing a forum for discussing a broad spectrum of issues while delivering compelling programming including Chris Plante, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, and Mark Levin.
Grandy In MAL Hot Water Over Islam Remarks - 3/2 - WMAL (630 AM) morning man Fred Grandy (right) made an announcement at the end of his Wednesday show saying that he could no longer discuss "radical Islam" topics on the air, a frequent focus of his show, especially when his wife, "Mrs. Fred," appears on Fridays. DCRTV hears that there's a "big meeting" this morning at the Citadel talker regarding Fred's future at the station. Could this be Fred's ploy to get himself yanked off the air? DCRTV has reported rumors that Fred wants to leave WMAL to run for Republican elected office in Iowa. He used to be a Congressman from that state. DCRTV had reported a rumbling in late 2010 that Fred wanted to leave WMAL by April 2011. More: A source confirms to DCRTV that Fred wants out of his WMAL contract, but that he has no plans to run again for public office. More as we hear it.....
Source: Grandy Gone From MAL - 3/2 - Breaking. A reliable source tells DCRTV that morning show host Fred Grandy (right) is no longer employed at WMAL (630 AM). DCRTV reported earlier today that Grandy wanted out of his contract with the Citadel-owned news talker, and that's apparently what he got in a meeting with WMAL Program Director Drew Hayes and Assistant Program Director Bill Hess after his Wednesday show. "There was all kind of yellin' and screamin' comin' from that room," we're told. "It was loud." More soon.....
Of course WMAL is the gutless station which fired Michael Graham in 2005 at the behest of CAIR for calling Islam a terrorist organization, and then fired Chris Plante last year for the same thing, replacing him with Joe Scarborough. Scarborough tanked so badly that the station's management had to rehire Chris and put him back into his old time slot.
After the station management told him and "Mrs. Fred" to "tone down" their discussions about Islam and terrorism, it looks like he told them to take their station and shove it.
PING!
I remember that. Graham made a BFD about saying how he didn't care how (un)PC his statement was - he was going to tell it like it was. He did, he got fired, then cried like a baby. He was a total phony.
No one should ever be told to “tone down” the truth.
I am not sure if this is the same guy, but I am darned sure some Freeper will tell me.
Yes, same guy.
Yep....he’s the same.
Indeed the same guy. He was my congrescritter when he was in office.
No way Grandy could have said anything compared to Chris Plante’s daily depictions of Islam-o-fascists as insane murder monkeys from hell and other equally accurate portrayals. WMAL is getting on my last nerve. I turned em off and sent a scalding letter to the idiots running that station when they gave Plante his involuntary vacation last year. And I’ve been listening since I was a kid and Harden and Weaver were the morning team.
That really sucks.
same chap..
Gopher gets kicked off WMAL Boat or Grandy gets CAIR Treatment!
I remember, too. He was absolutely right not to care; it was before censorship came to the U.S. -- he was willing to take the heat (read: criticism) for his un-PC position, but never dreamed he'd be fired.
Wouldn't you cry like a baby if you got canned simply for stating your opinion? (Well, you might not now in 2011; but in 2005 it was still unthinkable to be canned for simply voicing an opinion when your job was to voice an opinion.)
I hear Graham has another radio show somewhere. I hope that's true.
Holy crap. First Andy now Fred - my commutes gonna suck now.
Mrs Fred is probably the issue. She’s a lot more hard core about Islamic terrorism than Fred is. My guess is that things boiled over last week when they had a guest on at Mrs. Fred’s request (forgot his name) who connected all the dots between CAIR and the Muslim Brotherhood.
Michael is up in Boston now.
Good morning. I found out this morning that Fred Grandy has left the station. While I was not a big fan of his, I made it a point to tune in on Fridays to listen to him and Mrs. Fred.
First it was Michael Graham. Then Chris Plante though you later hired him back after being confronted with the dismal rating of Scarborough. Than it was Andy Parks. Now it is Fred Grandy and his wife.
If you think this will satisfy CAIR, you are sadly mistaken. All it will do is have your ratings tank again.
I drive in from Hungtingtown to Washington, DC each morning and tuned into WMAL while doing so. Now I will be tuning into WCBM 680 instead. They seem to have more courage than you do.
I will also inform your national hosts of my decision and I will also go on Free Republic and tell anyone who will listen about your gutless radio station. Have a good day.
Though I know this will probably do nothing, I believe this to be the right decision for me. After this, I will email Rush, Sean, and Mark, letting them know I will no longer listen to them on WMAL.
