Texas immigration bill has big exception
cnn.com ^ | 3/1/2011 | Mariano Castillo

Amid a number of bills filed in Texas that address the issue of illegal immigration, one, proposed by Republican state Rep. Debbie Riddle, stands out.

As proposed, House Bill 2012 would create tough state punishments for those who "intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly" hire an unauthorized immigrant. Violators could face up to two years in jail and a fine of up to $10,000.

But it is an exception included in the bill that is drawing attention. Those who hire unauthorized immigrants would be in violation of the law -- unless they are hiring a maid, a lawn caretaker or another houseworker.

It is a tough immigration bill with a soft side that protects those who hire unauthorized immigrants "for the purpose of obtaining labor or other work to be performed exclusively or primarily at a single-family residence."

Texas state Rep. Aaron Pena, a Democrat, said the exception is a wise one.

"With things as they are today, her bill will see a large segment of the Texas population in prison" if it passes without the exception, he said.

"When it comes to household employees or yard workers, it is extremely common for Texans to hire people who are likely undocumented workers," Pena said. "It is so common, it is overlooked."

The Texas legislature convenes only once every two years, so Texas has not passed tough anti-illegal immigration laws like some other states. The result has been that unauthorized immigrants in those states are relocating to Texas, Berman said.

Riddle did not return repeated calls for comment. Her office said she would not comment on the bill because it could still be modified.

In a interview with the Texas Tribune, Riddle's chief of staff, Jon English, explained that the exception was to avoid "stifling the economic engine" in Texas.

Rep Riddle must have an illegal alien maid, lawn caretaker or other houseworker all her own.

Texas is going to eventually end up like California. CA’ers wanted cheap yard labor too. That worked out real well. Stupid open borders TX RINOs.

But an exception included in the bill would be for those that hire illegal aliens as maids, landscapers and other "house" workers...

Good grief!

Houseworker??

So along with maids, servants, landscapers, tree trimmers, we can include plumbers, those doing construction on the home, electrical work, painters, etc, etc, etc, etc.....

Sounds like NC.

Yes... I agree. It’s pretty hypocritical.

However... If it’s all what we can get then I hope we get it.

The large institutional employers, like the restaurant
industry, hotels and construction... ALL need to get their noses bloodied. I’m sick of subsidizing their business models through taxpayer handouts to illegals.

How in hell can they do that, yet allow the illegal aliens to legally work for others?

???

I don’t think these would qualify to be exempted beacuse these type of contractors “should” have a state license.
Like on the AC/Heat trucks it will say TACLBXXXX. That’s for
Texas Air Conditioning Licensing Board... I think. Anyway, I think its intended for “domestics” only.

Well.... Riddle prolly wrote it that way, to give it a chance to pass. She must have had some reason.

Maids who enter private residence's don't need to be licensed?

This will open a can of worms....

How is it possibly to make it illegal for the restaurant or construction company to hire illegals, but it's OK for homeowners?

This won't fly....

Either we have a rule of law, or we don't.

Hard to believe a Republican came up with this scheme.

This is nothing but corruption and undermining the rule of law.

Republicans once again compromising their principles regardless of consequences.

Look on the bright side... If it, at least, threw a million out of the state... that would be a great start.

You gotta punish the employers who have built their whole business model around cheap labor illegals. Their the big
fish.

And it would be pretty funny to see some snooty HR beeotch put in orange jumpers and frog marched down to the county jail. Because I PROMISE you, those HR types know EXACTLY what’s going on. Let a few of them spend a night or two in the tank with the “working girls” and they WON’T be hiring any more illegals.

I don’t think you have much to worry about anyway... RINO Rick Perry would never sign it. He’s going to eat a piece of
cheese... squeak... and then say “well this law just isn’t right for Texas. Afterward he’ll go have a beer with his big business illegal alien employer friends.
