Well, it would be more desirable than using women and children, which has, unfortunately, been done many times.
Always room for a lawyer joke! But in all seriousness, the point of using rats rather than anything bigger (like dogs) is their small size and light weight hopefully won’t set anything off the way something with more mass would.
