Reuters) - Wisconsin's Republican Gov. Scott Walker said on Monday that absent senate Democrats have 24 hours to return and vote on a measure to reduce the power of public sector unions or the state will miss out on opportunity to refinance its debt.
"Now they have one day to return to work before the state loses out on the chance to refinance debt, saving taxpayers $165 million this fiscal year," Walker's spokesman Cullen Werwie said in a statement.
"Failure to return to work and cast their votes will lead to more painful and aggressive spending cuts in the very near future," the statement said.
Walker's budget proposal has sparked nationwide protests from labor unions who fear it could be a harbinger of things to come in other states. To balance the state's budget, Walker wants to require public sector employees to pay more for pensions and health care, and to strip their unions of bargaining rights except for wages up to the rate of inflation.

You may be correct. I hope so...the article didn’t state that it was being done to lower the debt rate..I read it as refinancing ( “rolling over”) a debt because the $$ wasn’t there to pay it off...unless he cut the state payroll...
LIBERAL MADISON JUDGE ORDERS CAPITOL REOPENED FOR PROTESTORS
Let's reverse things for a minute. If the Dems were in charge there and tried to prevent republican and independent protestors from entering the capital, would that be okay with you?
Aren't we all to supposed to have access? Just asking?
Sounds like a great idea...until China and Russia decide to attack the South.
Then its not such a great idea.
The north would join with Canada (and Canada being ruled by Communists would have them) and give us the three fingered salute.
The Disaster that is Detroit does not apply to Wisconsin nor would it be possible to fire and hire thousands of teachers in any reasonable length of time. In the Detroit case the school closures won’t be within the next few months but beginning next year at the earliest. In the Wisconsin case you would be talking about assembling entirely new staffs within days or weeks. Totally unrealistic.
It is a moot point in any case since the teachers are back in school.
State legislatures are even worse than the federal. Many are a refuge for corrupt loons. Compared to these guys Congressmen are geniuses.
The only way she leaves is if the House votes here out and that won’t happen in a million years. Remember the Senator who had a stroke or something disabling and he was out for a year or so.
If all the RAT Congressmen were vegetables it would be a great improvement in Congress.
Fifty per cent of Americans pay no federal INCOME tax (probably state as well). They do pay other taxes: sales, liquor, utility and property.
Which is why I'm always suspicious of those "Repeal the 17th Amendment" arguments.
Just checkin in. Is the 24 hours up yet?
I understand that concern but even the Illinois legislature (which must be among the worst in the nation) could not select worse Senators than those the People have routinely sent to the Senate. Seriously has there ever been a worse Senator than Carol Mosley Braun or Urkle?
Nah, I rarely pay a toll and never really “have to”

Well, there was William Clark of Nevada, of whom Mark Twain said, “”He is as rotten a human being as can be found anywhere under the flag; he is a shame to the American nation, and no one has helped to send him to the Senate who did not know that his proper place was the penitentiary, with a ball and chain on his legs. To my mind he is the most disgusting creature that the republic has produced since Tweed’s time.”
LoL, don’t get on Mark Twain’s bad side.
>>nor would it be possible to fire and hire thousands of teachers in any reasonable length of time. <<
You’re kidding right?
Look, I’m a Homeschooling Mom. I’ve seen people who can’t think themselves out of a paper bag, watch children educate themselves by K12 Virtual School. With the internet, and on the school’s computers, those teachers would be obsolete. All they would have to do is contact K12 and they would be set up in a day.
Reagan didn’t hesitate to fire Air Traffic Controllers and replace them. You think teachers can’t be replaced? They can, in a heartbeat my FRiend.
Look, we had the only poll that counts, at the ballot box in November. Teachers, firefighters and policemen all knew that the good times were coming to an end. They took the chance when they supported Obamacare and the stimulus bill and they lost. They bet on the wrong horse.
The ONLY real support that Obama had for Obamacare came from the government unions and the politicians they support. As Obama famously said, “Elections have consequences, we won.” Those union people had a good thing going for themselves, but they pushed too far. Obamacare is just the last straw.
