Reuters) - Wisconsin's Republican Gov. Scott Walker said on Monday that absent senate Democrats have 24 hours to return and vote on a measure to reduce the power of public sector unions or the state will miss out on opportunity to refinance its debt.
"Now they have one day to return to work before the state loses out on the chance to refinance debt, saving taxpayers $165 million this fiscal year," Walker's spokesman Cullen Werwie said in a statement.
"Failure to return to work and cast their votes will lead to more painful and aggressive spending cuts in the very near future," the statement said.
Walker's budget proposal has sparked nationwide protests from labor unions who fear it could be a harbinger of things to come in other states. To balance the state's budget, Walker wants to require public sector employees to pay more for pensions and health care, and to strip their unions of bargaining rights except for wages up to the rate of inflation.

Excellent point. States tax pro ball players for each game...
[Cant some Commie in black robes simply overrule Walkers actions?]
That is exactly what happened when the KS legislature. School districts sued the state saying they were refusing to provide adequate funding and won. Since the 2005 lawsuit, K-12 schools have received an additional $600 million in aid. This resulted in a $.01 sales tax increase to close the budget gap. Now the legislature and Governor Brownback are going to try and get a constitutional amendment that would remove the KSSC from diputes regarding school funding.
Funny thing, as a Tea party participant, I’ve been labeled a risk.
Never been in trouble in my life. But I’m considered a risk.
Christian, Family man, gun owner, former military, business owner.
Let’s see who starts beating heads and killing folks. Bet it’s unionists, thugs and Democrats/
I think they stopped the direct deposit of their pays this week.
This is too easy. This makes me think Walker is going to go for option 2...after 30 days they are considered resigned.
This will allow for him to really stack the deck against the unions by getting even more republicans in office! Hopefully they’ll be conservatives.
I hope the aggressive spending cuts are made to impact the districts of those who have fled. It is only fair because their constituents apparently have not been putting pressure on them to return and seem to approve of their antics. No reason the brunt of their actions should be put equally on the shoulders of all citizens of the state I think.
Let them act up while we obey the laws...the majority of people that I know (I live in Wisconsin) are now in favor of what Walker is doing.
I personally think he must not want to restructure the debt because that just kicks the ball down the line further. By not allowing the vote to take place because the rats are out of state...he gets to cut spending now (layoffs) because they aren’t there. He’s saving real money by doing this and not just restructuring the problem.
The rats must be playing into his hands because he clearly has alternatives to getting the union laws passed.
Let me summarize your post.
The states and cities should not seek to make the unpayable union deals, null and void because, the judges will still make the taxpayer pay it anyway.
So, nothing should be done to union deals that have become unpayable.
Is that what you are saying?
Swear out arrest warrants if the Subpoenas to their offices go unanswered for their Court Appearances.
I think they went AWOL on Feb 17, so they have a long way to go for 30 days. I think they will return on the 29th day. you have to know they will have their butts covered.
Don't spell the plan out so well. They (the rats) would not be able to figure this out on their own.
“Its already starting to look like empty threats, on his part. They called his bluff. Of he isnt going to do anything, he may as well fold”
You got to know when to hold em, know when to fold em. He is not going to be folding on this hand. The Dems have already lost, just a matter of time, as soon as people start getting laid off, they will be screaming for these lazy Dems to get back to work.
He's been threatening layoffs ever since the dems left. Has actually laid anyone off yet?
And still they get elected and MOST people will still send their children into the classrooms to be taught by these people. I hope parents are watching and wake up...pull your kids out of public school.
He’s been saying he is going to lay people off since the dems left. How many more times can he say it before it starts looking like an idle threat?
He hasn’t had to YET. Today is supposedly the last day to restructure the debt which will save them millions. Of course it depends on what they mean by save...does it mean that future generations will have to pay it instead—if so then it’s not really saving anything. But anyway, when the checks come due and he can’t pay them he’ll need to cut workers.
Layoffs are pending.
“Hes been saying he is going to lay people off since the dems left. How many more times can he say it before it starts looking like an idle threat?”
He can say it up until he does it. It will happen.
While you're at it, pass a "Constitutional Carry" CCW bill.
