Why Arab turmoil could mean an orgy of bloodletting and rocketing oil prices

Even by the repressive standards of Middle Eastern autocrats, Colonel Gaddafi has long cut a brutally capricious figure. But while nobody who remembers the murder of WPC Yvonne Fletcher or the appalling slaughter at Lockerbie will mourn Gaddafi’s downfall, this year’s tumultuous events in North Africa could mark a shocking and seismic shift in the balance of power. We are at a hinge moment in world history. As the Arab revolutions have shown, the old certainties are cracking apart.

People power: Libyans shout anti-Gaddafi slogans during demonstrations in the town of Derna yesterday. But while many look forward to the dictator being overthrown, his demise could lead to uncertainty across the globe

And despite the naive predictions of a new liberal order, the future might well prove a very dangerous place indeed — with potentially devastating economic repercussions for millions of British families. Indeed, in all the excitement at the fall of the Arab autocracies, it is hard to miss the whiff of Western hubris. Like the arrogant neo-conservatives who thought it would be child’s play to export democracy to Iraq, many of the idealists exulting in the giddy triumphs of street politics believe history is on their side.

And when events have played themselves out, there is a good chance the results will be very different from the utopian fantasies of the armchair pundits. As a student of history, David Cameron will recall that revolutions rarely turn out as their architects intend. And as the great Whig thinker Edmund Burke pointed out at the time of the French Revolution, rebellions rapidly develop their own uncontrollable momentum.

Like the arrogant neo-conservatives who thought it would be child’s play to export democracy to Iraq...

Since Iraq was a misguided enterprise, I wonder why it is the only country over there not engulfed in flames and still has a mildly stable democracy still in place. Maybe if we intervened more in the past, this moment would not be the massively destabilizing event it is turning out to be.

Simple answer - because our Muslim-loving, Uber-Marxist, Control-freak, Dictator, Anti-Christ WannaBe “president” wants prices to skyrocket.

It all comes down to this - a fully-functioning “One World Government” requires there to be no “superpowers” in the old sense of the word. With the US as the last “1st World” nation that can still at least partially claim that status, the US must be brought down in power. This is only possible if we crumble economically - as that will open the door.

The Democrats (aka - the party of Marxism) have pontificated and bloviated for some time about needing to be “energy independent”, yet they consistently force policies that create just the opposite. This is not by accident. This is the plan, and has been for quite some time. There was a day when we still had TRUE patriots who saw this and actually TRIED to do something about it. They have been vilified and pushed out (Think Senator McCarthy).

We have been focused on keeping our gun rights, and have been somewhat remiss at actually forcing the issue on economic policy. We have seen our Federal (and State governments as well) grow to absolutely insane size and power. Our founding fathers would be violently ill, and maybe just a bit mad at us for letting it get this far.

And I believe we are not far from a point that it won’t matter how many guns we have -

Nikita Khrushchev’s words ring prophetic now, don’t they?

1959 - Nikita Khrushchev, dictator of the Soviet Union, states: “We can’t expect the American people to jump from Capitalism to Communism, but we can assist their elected leaders in giving them small doses of Socialism until they awaken one day to find they have Communism.”

1961 - Nikita Kruschev states: “We do not have to destroy America with missiles; America will destroy itself from within.”

I heard tonight that there is a Facebook call for a “Day of rage” in Saudi. Not sure when.

Start stocking up.

Do the Asian supermarkets sell 50 lb bags of rice?

With Gaddhafi’s threat to sabotage the oilfields, I wonder why the Navy isn’t steaming as many forces as it can muster to the area. George W. Bush would not have put up with such a threat for a minute and neither would his father.

Many large “normal” supermarkets stock large sacks of rice, typically from India or Thailand, in their ethnic foods section.

He controls TV and the news media but those who watch support or at least empower him. Fox Al Waleed is no better. Yeah he is evil but the masses are stupid. Incredibly stupid. Seniors and baby boomers are screwed thanks to him and those who voted for him.

I rail about TV but many of those here have not noticed how he keeps consolidating his power over the media including his lackeys at Fox like O’Reilly.

What is going on is:
A war between Shia Islam (Iran) and Sunni Islam (Saudi Arabia) that has been going on for about 1,379 years. The muslims only hate one thing more than christians/jews/infidels - each other.

The West, largely Britain and also the US, set up fairly secular strong men like Sadat/Mubarak, The Shah, Saddam, House of Saud (should be fraud) to keep islamic and arabic fascism under control.

Saddam was a buffer between Iran and Saudi Arabia. The buffer is now gone.

I’ve always wondered if a good way to store rice and other perishables, would be to put them in 5 gallon pails, melt wax and then pour a layer over top?

sounds reasonable to me. As long as the wax seals up nice and tight to the sides.

Sam's Club. $13. You can also get a 5 lb bag of dried beans for $8. If you are going to live it up during the insurrection you can get 2 quarts of Kikkoman soy sauce for a few dollars more. Liquid salt makes everything taste good.

Works better to put the rice, etc, in a mylar bag inside the bucket, and throw in an oxygen absorber.

I buy mine at Emergency Essentials

"You can also get a 5 lb bag of dried beans for $8."

I just bought 4# of pinto beans for $3.09 (plus tax) 2/21/11.

My next cook once, eat for 10 days project, is bake the 10.5# "picnic" ham I also bought ($1.54/lb.) and eat ham dinners for as long as they appeal to me, then ham sandwiches as long as I can, then cut up and freeze the remainder for future crock-pot ham and bean sprees.

But, I can't do that until I clean up two more days' worth of left-over lasagna.

Did someone say ‘Orgy?’ Billy Jeff will surely be stopping by for his ‘Lewinsky’ and Al Gore will be there also receiving his ‘happy ending’ massage.
