If a person sponsors a bill that unconstitutionally constrains free speech and proposes to sell American citizenship for ten cents on the dollar, he cannot ever claim to be a conservative.

By the same token, if one can conceive of and enact a socialist universal health care bill, one cannot call himself a conservative.
