ATLANTA - The group Georgians for Sunday Sales is expected to gather on the state capitol steps on Washington Street at noon Wednesday.
They'll urge lawmakers to pass a bill that would allow local communities to decide for themselves on the issue of Sunday alcohol sales.
One bill has stalled in the senate while the house is considering a similar measure.
Georgia is one of three states that doesn't allow Sunday sales.
So in the short time they have, are they tackling the serious economic isssues at hand? No, the big issue is Sunday alcohol sales.
Sunday sales have been banned as far back as I can remember (50+ years). It's not like it just popped up out of nowhere.
Frankly, I wouldn't have a problem if the changed the law to allow Sunday sales. What I do have a problem with is the legislature wasting time on such a trivial issue, when we are faced with serious (as in once in a lifetime) budget problems.
Maybe after they finish debating Sunday alcohol sales, they'll take up some really important issuse like paramutal betting and making butter pecan the state's offical ice cream flavor. Because we know it is so more important to spend time on those important issues than dealing with the state's economic/budget problems!

The Christian Coalition is blackmailing our elected reps so that they won’t even let the citizens decide either way.
I can’t wait to get out of this state.
Is the reason for banning Sunday sales religious? If we honor the second amendment, shouldn’t we honor the first? I own a cottage at a Virginia beach community. I go there on weekends. No outside work is allowed on Sunday. If I don’t mow my lawn on Saturday, it doesn’t get done. Even if it rains on Saturday can’t do it on Sunday. Can’t even paint outside, even if it is only with a brush and a step ladder. How does this square with the first amendment?

I knew a liquor store owner when I was growing up, and he was opposed to Sunday sales.
His take was they did a booming business on Fri. and Sat. as people stocked up for Sun. (when the store was closed). If Sun. sales were allowed, he didn’t think he would make any more sales, they would just be spread over three days instead of two. Plus, he would now have the extra expenses involved in being open an additonal day each week.
I’m not sure it would net that much in additional sales. Rather it would spread 6 days worth of sales over 7 days.
Guess the state has authority to dictate to the localities.
Is it a gated community, or set of properties owned by a landlord? If so, it’s a completely different matter. You entered into an agreement willingly. Totally different than the government mandating morality from on high, which has been a problem since the world was created.
Or join the party and help to pull the state out of the 19th century and into the present.
A lot of headway has been made in the past five years or so, but there is more to be done... just as with the Federal Govt, it will take years to reverse the damage the Dems/Socialists have done to the states.
The specifics are that restaurants can serve on a case-by-case basis. No private sales, though, so you can’t go down to the liquor store or gas station and grab a cold one.

At some point you have to set priorites. Do you really think Sunday alcohol sales is the biggest problem facing the state? Is it even in the top 10? The top 100?
Like I said, I’m ambivalent about the law. I drink and I’ve lived with this law all my life, and (bluntly) it has never prevented me from having a drink. They can change it or keep it, it won’t affect me much either way.
If being able to buy a bottle of liquor on Sunday (you can buy mixed drinks on Sunday at an restaurant/bar) is the biggest problem in your life, you may want to reprioritize some things.
The state is about to go into a budget meltdown. That’s where the priority should be.
You can purchase and consume alcohol by the drink at restaurants on Sunday, you just can't buy it at a store... completely idiotic.
I’ve knocked back a bourbon or two on Sundays at the airport in Atlanta, so there must be local jurisdiction on this.
Local communites have the autority to allow the sale of “drinks by the glass” on Sundays. In most metropolitan areas in the state you can go into a restaurant or bar on Sunday and buy a bottle of beer or glass or scotch (and drink it there), but you can’t buy a six pack of beer of fifth of scotch and take it home.
Like I said, the Sunday sales ban doesn’t actually stop anyone from drinking. You learn to stock up ahead of time.
(M)assachusetts dropped this ban a few years ago and guess what? The world didn’t end! WOW!
I do not like big government statism from the right or left!!! Anytime you people fighting against adults making adult choices we have a big problem. If you do not want beer on Sunday do not buy or drink it...simple...

Oh, then in that case, it’s wrong. Good luck getting your local morality police to back down, though.
