The Providence Journal of Rhode Island reports that the Providence school district "plans to send out dismissal notices to every one of its 1,926 teachers, an unprecedented move that has union leaders up in arms." The paper continues:
In a letter sent to all teachers Tuesday, Supt. Tom Brady wrote that the Providence School Board on Thursday will vote on a resolution to dismiss every teacher, effective the last day of school.
In an e-mail sent to all teachers and School Department staff, Brady said, We are forced to take this precautionary action by the March 1 deadline given the dire budget outline for the 2011-2012 school year in which we are projecting a near $40 million deficit for the district, Brady wrote. Since the full extent of the potential cuts to the school budget have yet to be determined, issuing a dismissal letter to all teachers was necessary to give the mayor, the School Board and the district maximum flexibility to consider every cost savings option, including reductions in staff. State law requires that teachers be notified about potential changes to their employment status by March 1.
To be clear about what this means, Brady wrote, this action gives the School Board the right to dismiss teachers as necessary, but not all teachers will actually be dismissed at the end of the school year.
Providence faces a $57 million budget deficit this year and expects an even larger budget deficit next year.

It was embarrassing just HOW stupid these people were.
They get into the ‘system’ then settle back for a nice long ride. It would be different if they actually PRODUCED!!
Instead, students get out of the ‘system’ dumb and dumber and then whole generations of these parasites are thrown upon the government system of welfare..... at the taxpayers’ expense. This isn't even taking into consideration the cradle to grave Liberal bias that the NEA reinforces nine ways from Sunday and all with the indispensable help of 'teachers'
Man. It's Pearl Harbor! A public sector employee has to face what the rest of us have faced for the past 3 years. Layoffs. Firings. Scaled back benefits. Pay cuts. Oh, the humanity. These teachers are in some kind of echo chamber where their whining to each other is all they hear.
Odd how RI which is a Dem state with lots of unions can do license checks for illegal aliens and fire teachers and the news media never says a peep.
And the Catholic schools, of course, are NOT on strike, nor the privates, since they aren’t union. May they pick these students up and teach them the things they do need to know.
Please tell me where teachers are making over 100k a year with full benefits who aren't at LEAST 30-year seniors in the field...
Teachers don't start out making much at all!!! Please try not to use hyperbole when trying to make a point which is more believable utilizing FACT.
I hope the entire fat educrat system breaks down from coast to coast. I want to pitch a tent in my front yard bring in a dry erase board and teach the classics and watch as these prog-brats get weaned from taxpayer money. My daughter has a Obama freak teacher completely brain-washing the kids on race (showed a PBS/Ford Foundation documentary painting the founders as racist, railed against Fox news during the gabby incident and lately gave a kid five extra points for writing Obama Rocks on his test. I wrote extensively to the principal about what my daughter told me. they pulled kids out of class to investigate but have no idea the line of questioning used on the kids but they knew teacher was in hot water. guess kids did not feel brave enough to speak up plus too young to understand the political platforming she was setting up. you cannot tape them and that would be the only way to get the evidence. I think conservatives need to really be aware of the crap some teachers are pushing especially in middle/high school. I have fought the good fight but the asst. Principal told me their investigation did not support my claims.I responded by saying I know you guys aren’t going to do anything my daughter did not make this stuff up but I requested that they keep my letters in her file.I believe this could be stopped if students were permitted to tape teachers in class.
This is a very sought after magnet school in Houston. High School for thePerforming and Visual Arts.
This teacher was supposed to be teaching GEOGRAPHY.
The unintended consequence of government “fixing problems” by decree. Government thinks they can just SAY you have to do something, and it will be doable. But they can’t figure out who is going to be laid off so far in advance.
SO they tell everybody they are fired. Since there isn’t keen competition for teachers, and teachers were always free to quit anyway, the law ends up being pretty useless. They don’t really know they are fired, so they don’t know they HAVE to go find new work.
But some politician got credit (or at least took credit) for “protecting the teachers” with this stupid law.
The “average” income for the teachers in Wisconsin who are out “sick” or protesting is reported as $104,000 per year...Not TOP...not starting...but average....
WHen I was growing up, the teachers were only paid during the months they were working, not in the summer. So, when people noted that they only worked 10 months, the teachers pointed out that they only got paid for when they worked.
Someone then suggested changing how they were paid so they would get a weekly salary all year, and the teachers screamed that they were getting a pay cut, because each paycheck would be smaller. They argued that the paychecks should be kept the same.
Since notice must be given by March 1 for any teacher they might want to terminate, they just give notice on March 1 to ALL teachers, then decide at the end of the school year who to really lay off.

If you can show all the protests by teachers as a group against the implementation of a voucher system were fabrications and made up you have a point.
If you can not, you are a liar and they are parasites.
I don't care if that hurts your little feelings, or the little feelings of any teachers you know.
Put up or shut up.
This is great. Thanks for the ping

Average total compensation, not average salary. Equals salary plus cost of benefits like pension, medical, etc.
I agree with you. I was surprised. I never would not have thought that either.
That is what I keep seeing in the articles but, I think they must be talking about ‘total employee cost’ instead of just actual salary. Total compensation ‘total cost of a teacher’ is different than salary.
But yea, I would never expect it to be that high, so I must have been looking at distorted figures somehow. Will be more careful from now on.
Most individuals choosing “teaching” as a career have SAT scores that rank third (3rd!) from the bottom of the list of professions. Public school administrators score second (2nd) from the bottom. Try to sleep at night with those figures and the consequences of them rushing around in your head.
A lot of them can't even make themselves understood to EACH OTHER.
