OHNO SELECTED AS GRAND MARSHAL
America’s most decorated winter sports athlete to rev up NASCAR event at PIR

PrintEmail ShareRecord-setting short-track speed skater and Season 4 Dancing with the Stars champ Apolo Anton Ohno – a national spokesman for SUBWAY® – has been named Grand Marshal for the upcoming SUBWAY Fresh Fit 500™ at Phoenix International Raceway on Sunday, Feb. 27.

“I am excited to serve as the Grand Marshal of the SUBWAY Fresh Fit 500™ and be a part of such a big event,” said Ohno. “Since I started working with SUBWAY®, I have had the opportunity to be a part of several unique experiences, and having the chance to give the most famous racing command, ‘Gentleman, start your engines,’ is going to be something to remember.”

In addition to saying the most famous words in racing, Ohno’s duties as Grand Marshal will include working with PIR officials and SUBWAY® to help welcome fans, drivers, and teams to Phoenix for the first West Coast race of the 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season.

The newest famous fan of SUBWAY®, Ohno will compete in his first marathon, the ING New York City Marathon, in November at the urging of renowned SUBWAY® commercial star Jared Fogle. Fogle completed the marathon in 2010.

At 28 years old, Ohno is the most decorated American winter sports athlete of all-time with well over 30 medals won in international competition for short-track speed skating. A 12-time U.S. National Champion, Ohno has been the top U.S. short-track speed skater for the past decade. Recently, he was ranked in the top 10 of Business Week’s 2011 Top 100 Most Powerful Athletes and published an autobiography, Zero Regrets: Be Greater Than Yesterday, which reached the New York Times best-seller list.

In addition to his speed skating achievements, Ohno paired with dancing partner Julianne Hough to win Dancing with the Stars in 2007. Ohno has also appeared as a guest judge on the Bravo Network’s fashion reality show "Project Runway."

Trevor Bayne, who won the 53rd Daytona 500™ just one day after his 20th birthday on Sunday, will head a star-studded cast of honored guests for Phoenix International Raceway’s annual “Night of Champions” charity event on Feb. 24 at the Arizona Biltmore. He will be joined by NASCAR Nationwide Series driver and Valley local Danica Patrick, three-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Darrell Waltrip, and former IndyCar driver Lyn St. James to help PIR President Bryan R. Sperber celebrate the start of the 2011 NASCAR season and the SUBWAY Fresh Fit 500™ event weekend in Phoenix. More info here....

NASCAR’s new scoring system proves not so simple
(“Obviously this is an anomaly,” NASCAR spokesman )
http://sports.yahoo.com/nascar/news;_ylt=AowOf8KsCEcPvxhq8LJSQN7ov7YF?slug=ap-nascar-pointsleaders

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP)—NASCAR’s simplified new points system turned out not to be so simple after the first full weekend of racing.

Carl Edwards left Daytona International Speedway as the Sprint Cup Series points leader. Landon Cassill heads the Nationwide Series standings, and Clay Rogers is atop the Trucks Series standings.

None of them won a single race last weekend.

So what gives?

You got it!

Wait, there’s more.. :-}

Is it a problem non-race winners currently lead?
Edwards, Cassill and Rogers didn’t win, but find themselves leading the points

We got trouble in River City..

Observation:

I was just listening and not talking to the old guard NASCAR people monday and tuesday. Nobody liked the race itself but they liked the results.

As one lady said, we will see after Daytona if this love bug crap continues.

I thought it was like love bugs too. There could be a shift in fan base from conservatives to liberals. And lots of pink cars.

I’m actually OK with the way things are. And the race was different, but better than the big pack, IMO.

Being fast made more of a difference this year, especially in the Duels.

And it’s so refreshing to see some different teams running up front, and in front of the mega-teams in the points.

Well, it will continue at Daytona and Talladega. It’s not an issue at the other tracks.
