(Bartlett, TN 2/21/2011) An eight month old pit bull puppy was shot dead by Bartlett Police.
Now, the owner wants answers. Police say they shot the dog because it charged them.
The owner says police had no reason to shoot the puppy because it was asleep inside a bathroom at his house.
"That was basically my best friend and they just came in here and killed her," said dog owner Maurice Flanagan.
Flanagan is talking about Lexus, his eight month old pit bull puppy. He has cell phone video taken just days before he says Bartlett Police shot and killed his dog. Friday morning Bartlett Police Department came to his North Memphis home to execute a search warrant.
A copy of the warrant says police were looking for drugs.
"They made us all get down on the ground. The officer said who is here? I said my dog is in the back and as soon as I got done saying that we heard like four shots go off.
A copy of the Investigative Inventory form shows police took a marijuana joint, digital scale, gun, cell phone and money. A check of Maurice Flanagan's Shelby County criminal history came back clean.

“Thanks, but I already had a good ideal of your IQ.”
Actually, it’s 145 - although it looks like you could work on spelling and grammar.
LOL! All you base are belong to us!
What the heck are you trying to type, org.whodat?
This is hugh and series!
Disgusting comment.
And YOURS was a disgusting comment, too.
Nobody but newbies takes your bait on these threads. Aren't you partying a little early today? ;)
To a roided cop, everything looks like drug paraphenalia. Tennessee requires no registration of handguns or gun owners. He had no criminal record, so prima facie the gun was legal. Cops only call money "(possible) drug proceeds" so they can steal it.
Brad’s Gramma nails it.
“My girlfriend has a dog like that. I’d shoot the barking little pest in a minute if I thought I could get away with it.”
FRiend, you need to get a different girl friend, if that’s the case. This relationship is not going to work out.
Scary. I have a digital scale, a cell phone, and a gun in my home; no marijuana, but I do have bags of chopped, dried herbs (nettles, mint, etc) that could be mistaken for it. I guess if the cops ever drop by, my dogs are toast.
My father in law has one and it is a great dog but kills anything in her territory not familiar to her. I can let my kids play with her and she is a big baby with them. However I agree some breeds are not trustworthy.
What evidence do you have that the puppy in question had attacked anyone?
Regarding #3, some people have done just that. There are STILL reports of cops entering bathrooms, bedrooms and other rooms where they are TOLD the family dog is present and shooting it anyway.
Dope dealer? If one marijuana joint makes a dope dealer, then one wall and no roof make a house.
< / obligatory LOTR reference >
I see one joint, a gun that he seems to have LEGALLY held as his second amendment right (if he illegally held it, I’m sure the journalist would have told us) and his own money which was STOLEN by the police.
The only illegal item in the list? The joint.
Clean criminal history = either he is such a smart criminal that he has NEVER been caught or he’s a regular Joe whose home was unlawfully invaded.
Remember, if bad cops can do it to him, they can do it to you or any other Freeper.
