Gillett council responds to Walker budget plan (City screws taxpayers while Senate Rats hide)

The plan that is causing so much controversy would not only impact teachers, but also people like your local city workers. Friday one area city council took action on behalf of its employees.

While thousands upon thousands in Madison have reacted to Governor Walker's plans, six people who make up the Gillett city council have also reacted.

The council called a special meeting, and approved a resolution regarding its city workers: people like police officers and members of the public works department. The resolution itself is a bit complicated, but all the percentages and legal language result in this bottom line for city employees.

"Essentially what it's doing is it's going to keep their wages, employees take home wages the same as what they were previous to the bill being passed, if the budget bill is passed," said Brandon Miller, Gillett mayor.

The mayor says before this resolution passed, the city paid the employees, and also paid directly into their retirements. Now, the city is paying the employees more, but the employees are contributing to their own retirement plans.

A few people were at the meeting and didn't want to talk on camera, however said they were upset by this move. They said the change will cost the taxpayers more money. The mayor, however, says the funding has already been budgeted.

"It's basically reallocating," said Miller. "Because right now it is a fact that the employees aren't contributing to their retirement or their insurance at this point. There's no disagreement that we think that that is a good thing that they do contribute. But we have always taken that into account when we look at pay raises and so forth as their overall package. We're not in a collective bargaining unit here. So they will be effected, that's why we wanted to make that pass."

The mayor says if the governor's proposal passes, Gillett's city workers will already be in line with it. If it doesn't, he says the resolution will remain.

Gillett has 12 full time city employees. The mayor says this resolution will ensure they receive a fair wage

If anyone needs a good example of how corrupt public unions and corrupt public employees have made it IMPERATIVE that our Governor Walker take down the unions, it is what the mayor of Gillett just did.

By passing an ordinance requiring the TAXPAYERS to make up the difference between what the city employees pay now and what they will pay after the budget repair bill passes, the Mayor will cost the taxpayers of his little town a ton of money. For example, supposing and average salary of even $40,000 per employee and health care costs of $15,000 per employee, the mayor will cost his taxpayers 5.6% x 40,000 x 12 and 12.5% x $15,000 x 12. So in this little paradise of 12 public employees, the taxpayers will be on the hook for an additional almost $50,000 PER YEAR because of their greed.

This is just one TINY example of how the public employees are ripping off the taxpayers, from tiny Gillett to Milwaukee to Madison. It is time to STOP THEM!

The citizens could always fire the mayor. 12 employees won’t win him re-election.

That is precisely why the Governor's bill is so powerful and why it is being fought so stridently.

You see the ultimate solution perfectly!

And Belling just made a great point. In a few months, state aid to the city of Gillett will be CUT - and maybe dramatically. They’ve just substantially increased the amount of their shortfall by this action.

Democracy in action. They made their bed, let them sleep in it.

Sorry for the repeat post, but this is the giant donkey in the room that no one is seeing. The stuff the legislature is trying to handle now is small potatoes compared to what is to come.

I am hoping that this kind of LOCAL action expands....THEN, the LOCAL people will know how much THEIR bloated public employees and Unions are extorting, and they will vote with their pocketbooks next election....this is how Union corruption, DNC-funneling of dues, etc. will be stopped.

I am hoping that Kasich continues on the same path as Scott Walker, cutting the excessive expenditures, and ALSO paring down all the cronyism-created "jobs" that are un-necessary and burdening taxpayers.

Democrat stupidity in action as well (oh, was that redundant?).

They are whipping themselves into a tizzy of monumental proportions over Scott Walker doing everything he can to PREVENT people from losing jobs, all while acting to make layoffs a certainty and even worse by their greed and stupidity.

What a stupid statement. If they're reallocating the money, what are they taking it away from?

My guess is the mayor of Gillett will be looking for a job.

I’m not upset by this. A city is a pretty small entity. If they want to tax their own citizens to pay too much for city workers, that’s fine with me. If those citizens don’t like it, they can elect different people, or move out of the city.
