I was hoping Dale, Jr. would win on the 10th Anniversary of his father's death and had a chance until 1st Green, White, Checker.
But what a story that a 20 year old rookie wins the Super Bowl on his 1st attempt!
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) Dale Earnhardt Jr. insisted he didn't believe in fairy tales and happy endings.
Trevor Bayne was too young to know any better.
Bayne, in just his second Sprint Cup Series start, pulled off a stunning victory in his first Daytona 500 on Sunday, becoming the youngest winner in the 53 years of the Great American Race. Bayne, who turned 20 the day before the biggest race of his career, took the Wood Brothers back to Victory Lane for the first time since 2001.
I’d be willing to bet Scott wouldn’t have wanted the shortened track. Bring back Fuel Altereds AND 1/4 mile racing!!!
Good finish to a disastrous week like you noted.
Right also Trevor Bayne has been racing since the age of 5. With over 300 career wins and 22 titles including 3 World Karting Association Championships. In 2005, he was in the Allison Legacy Series, making 22 starts including 12 wins, 14 poles and 19 top 5’s. In 2006, he joined Team Rensi in the USAR Pro Hooters Cup claiming the Rookie of the Year title at age 15, the youngest in history. In 2007, Bayne left Team Rensi to join Dale Earnhardt, Inc. In 2007 he competed in the USAR once again and in 2008 jumped to the Grand National East Division.
For the 2008 season, Bayne drove the #1 for Dale Earnhardt Incorporated in the NASCAR Camping World East Series. He had 6 Top 5’s, two poles and one win at Thompson International Speedway winning from the pole in just his 6th start. He finished second in that seasons Toyota All-Star Showdown. In the 2009 Scotts Turf Builder 300 at Bristol Motor Speedway, he made his first career start for Means Racing in the #52 Taco Bell Chevrolet. Also in 2009, Bayne agreed to race in the #99 Aarons Toyota for Michael Waltrip Racing for 8 races, and in his first start for the team, he qualified on the outside pole at Nashville Superspeedway, but a crash relegated him to a bad finish. He finished 12th at Kentucky Speedway and The Milwaukee Mile. He got his career best finish at O’Reilly Raceway Park when he finished 7th after getting his first career pole for that race. Bayne also qualified on the outside pole at Michigan, his first start on a track larger than 1.5 miles. In September 2010, Bayne left Diamond-Waltrip Racing and went to Roush-Fenway Racing to drive for Jack Roush. He made his Cup Series debut in the 2010 AAA Texas 500 at Texas Motor Speedway with the Wood Brothers, finishing 17th on the lead lap. Bayne is the first driver to compete in one of the top three NASCAR series to be born in 1991.
Bayne will drive the #21 Wood Brothers Racing Ford in 17 Sprint Cup races in 2011. He is ineligible for Rookie of the Year consideration because he will also run full-time in the Nationwide Series. In his second Sprint Cup race, one day after his 20th birthday, Bayne won the 2011 Daytona 500, making him the second youngest driver to ever win a Sprint Cup series race, and the youngest ever Daytona 500 winner[2]. This win ties the record set by Jamie McMurray for fewest starts by a driver to win their first Sprint Cup race (2).
Bayne didn’t receive any points for his victory, as 2011 rules state that drivers can choose only one series where they compete for points and Bayne selected the Nationwide Series.
In light of the unexpected Daytona 500 win, Wood Brothers Racing has announced that Trevor Bayne will attempt to qualify for the season’s sixth race, Goody’s Fast Pain Relief 500 at Martinsville Speedway, a race they had not originally scheduled to enter.[3] He was previously committed to the second through fifth Sprint Cup Series races at Phoenix International Raceway, Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Bristol Motor Speedway, and Auto Club Speedway, respectively.

Its him or Shrub..
honestly, this race is wide open.. could be a rookie winner today.
NASCAR is not stock car racing, which used to be pretty cool.
I don’t know when the change was made, but back in ‘63 I remember Scatback rooflines on the Ford Galaxy 427’s, who took the first five places at Daytona.
I admit I’m not the biggest nascar fan, but this kids victory lane speech won me over! Loved that he gave the glory to God and seemed like such a humble person to be so young. I plan to watch more races this season!
