The Obama administration has stripped NASA’s manned space program (killed lunar return and resource development) and funneled that money into the “new and improved” Green NASA that looks at Earth and studies global climate.

Our NASA centers across the country are laying off thousands of skilled workers.

But not to worry — The president has said the Tampa to Orlando rail line will need workers.

With Florida’s new High-Speed Rail link, Florida will be the Rail Coast not the Space Coast.

I have never been to Tampa but some years ago when the economy was very good I was able to afford a family vacation to Orlando, we have rented a vacation home there several times in january, a welcomed vacation from Alaska, not too warm to make us uncomfortable.

I really liked Orlando, but why on earth is their any kind of demand for people to whoosh between Tampa and Orlando?

I spent years in the Bay Area of San Jose and rode the BART trains a lot, but who is commuting? people who go to the theme parks don’t fly to Tampa, they go to Orlando.

I think its just a great big piece of smack candy from a street punk hoping to snare some addicts for future business. That is all Obama is doing, using big words of “investment” and “monorail” I mean its all about capturing and harvesting fantasy.

Congress should strip costly and ineffective high-speed rail funding from the FY 2010 budget.

Time to End Obama’s Costly High-Speed Rail Program
http://heritage.org/Research/Reports/2011/02/Time-to-End-Obamas-Costly-High-Speed-Rail-Program
Published on February 11, 2011 by Ronald Utt, Ph.D. Backgrounder #2520

TALKING POINTS
1 President Barack Obama’s latest proposal to spend $54 billion on high-speed rail (HSR) will worsen the deficit and undermine the nation’s economy.
2 The President’s HSR plan is faltering as two statesWisconsin and Ohiohave returned to Washington more than $1 billion in HSR grants, and Florida may soon follow suit.
3 The $3 billion in federal money to be invested in the California project may be lost forever as the state’s precarious finances and the project’s huge cost overruns (50 percent in two years) doom the system.
4 Experience in Europe and Asia indicates that HSR systems are very expensive to build and operate, and they attract only a modest share of the traveling public.
5 Despite Congress’s commitment of significant funding to the program, the President’s HSR program is in a state of collapse.
6 Congress should terminate the HSR program, rescind any unspent funds, and apply them to deficit reduction.

America’s Coming High-Speed Rail Financial Disaster
http://heritage.org/Research/Reports/2010/03/America-s-Coming-High-Speed-Rail-Financial-Disaster?query=America’s+Coming+High-Speed+Rail+Financial+Disaster
Revised and updated April 13, 2010 - Published on March 19, 2010 by Ronald Utt, Ph.D. Backgrounder #2389

TALKING POINTS
1 President Barack Obama’s endorsement of a high-speed rail plan will commit the United States to an exceptionally expensive form of transportation.
2 The President is also committing the taxpayers to a perpetual stream of vast operating subsidies to keep the system running.
3 An Amtrak study found that passenger rail subsidies in six European countries totaled $42 billion per year, proportionately similar to what the U.S. federal government spends on all transportation.
4 Despite these subsidies, only 7.9 percent of all surface passengers in these six countries use rail, while only 6.1 percent of passengers in all of Europe use rail.
5 Despite these high subsidies for European rail, passenger rail’s share of the market has declined over the past decade, while faster and cheaper airlines have gained.
