Rand Paul may still be green to the ways of the U.S. Senate (he only assumed office in January) but hes got a lot to say about the political state of the country. Most of his new book, The Tea Party Goes to Washington, is a defense of the movement from what he sees as unfair attacks by liberals, the Republican establishment and the mainstream media. He does, however, devote a few pages to his campaign, his childhood and his literary influences.

I know how much the Pauls are hated around here...but I am still a big fan. Ron’s isolationism doesn’t scare me, we can just as easily set a good example as expend useless blood and treasure in sand land.

On Sarah Palin: Jaws dropped when Rand Pauls team heard that Sarah Palin would be endorsing him. Palins endorsement gave us a boost that energized supporters, brought in new ones and, of course, annoyed my opponent [Trey Grayson] and his Republican bosses to no end, Paul writes. Shortly after the endorsement, Palin made a Saturday morning phone call to Pauls house. He recalls talking about two issues.
She wanted to know my position on Israel. I said that Israel was an important ally, the only democracy in the Middle East and that I would not condemn Israel for defending herself.
Next was the issue of abortion.
In talking to Palin, one of the primary things I wanted to do was allay any fears about social issues, telling her, My opponents call me a libertarian but I want to assure you that I am pro-life. Palin responded, Oh, we all have a little libertarian in us. Remember yesterday's thread in which one PDS'er claimed that Sarah hadn't actually done anything...?

In a bit of literary criticism, Paul writes:
“In Crime and Punishment, Dostoyevsky puts to the narrative the common nineteenth-century belief that if there were no God, all would be permissible. Dostoyevskys protagonist Raskolnikov acts out on that premise by killing a woman yet justifying it in his mind. He convinces himself that he will do some good with the ill-gotten proceeds and that the end justifies the means. The greatness of the book is that you can see and feel his fear leading up to the act, and you see and feel the relentless gnaw of his conscience eat away at him as he discovers that theory cannot ultimately trump conscience.”

That’s actually a pretty decent article. I’m kind of surprised coming from both the Post and a Paul.

It seems Rand goes out of his way to distance himself politically from his father, realizing Dad is a bit of a kook.

I get “tagged” with all kinds of “labels” here. I consider myself a Constitutionalist. Don’t give a damn what the rest here think because of my views on Ron Paul, foreign policy etc...
I am a Ron Paul fan too...

"It seems Rand goes out of his way to distance himself politically from his father, realizing Dad is a bit of a kook." Yeah... Just enough of a kook to stand up against all currently en-vogue politically accepted "norms" and take us back to our founding fathers "radical" idea's.
To: gorush
I’m more of a fan of the son than the father, but they both add to the discussion and I value Ron Paul’s opinions about Constitutional foreign entanglements.

Ron Paul likes to pretend radical Islamists aren't plotting to destroy America. He believes that if we leave them alone, they won't bother us. He may be the only elected official in the U.S. that makes Jimmy Carter look like a foreign policy genius....only because Noam Chomsky isn't an elected official.
