Wisconsin: Unions want to overturn election result
Milwaukee Journal-Sentinal ^ | 2/17/11 | Patrick McIlheran

Say you generally liked Gov. Scott Walker's move to rein in government labor costs but had a few doubts on his method. The last few days should have cleared that up nicely.

The public-sector union tantrums, meant to make lawmakers wobble, have an inadvertent message for the rest of us: Voters can vote all they want. We can elect a cheapskate governor and a Legislature to match. But come the moment, unions will have the last, loudest word.

They'll have it if takes marches. They'll have it if it takes what amounts to an illegal strike, with so many Madison teachers calling in sick Wednesday that the district closed schools. If it takes showing up for a we-know-where-your-family-is protest on Walker's Wauwatosa lawn while he was at work, the unions are sure they can outshout any election result.

This is exactly why Walker is right to limit the unions' power over government spending.

What would be ironic would be that they succeed, and then decide to overturn obamas “election”.

The students are protesting they want to be in school as these off days will take away from summer vacation. As a caller to Rush said today—the free breakfast and lunch programs, parents off work will not play well!! It's all about the kids!! Teachers that took students to the protest are irresponsible—the students interviewed “dude” had no clue what it was about. That's the dumbing down of America's students—and the teachers know just which ones to take advantage of.

There are so many outsiders up from Chicagoland—who are bent on causing trouble. It's what they are hired to do.

The fleeing Democrats are as yellow as the little bus they ran out on. They need to grow up and go vote, not run like the whining cowards they are..and Obama and the Democrats websites supporting this?

I hope this Governor holds out!! Obama is also overstepping his bounds. Inciting riots. When I think I can't get any more angry at this president..things like this happen. Frustrating!! Not in school by Monday—fired!! Obama is supporting union terrorists. If his kids were in that school--would be another story--its about collateral damage--The Kids!!

We’d been subject to every crying man on the tarmac and his family for weeks, and were sick of it already.

Weeks? Um, the strike started on August 3 and Reagan fired everyone on August 5. You memory is rather flawed.

Thank you for explaining WHY WE NEED TO BUST THE UNION!

My MIL was run over by a bus. Lost her leg and almost lost her life. The bus was a Chicago MTA bus, and the union driver had prior ‘issues’ ... they kept this guy on because of the union.

What that bus driver did to my Mom’s legs, union teachers are doing to our kids.

No sympathy from me after the union bastards kill the goose laying those golden eggs.

Even President Franklin Roosevelt, a friend of private-sector unionism, drew a line when it came to government workers: “Meticulous attention,” the president insisted in 1937, “should be paid to the special relations and obligations of public servants to the public itself and to the Government….The process of collective bargaining, as usually understood, cannot be transplanted into the public service.”

The reason? F.D.R. believed that “[a] strike of public employees manifests nothing less than an intent on their part to obstruct the operations of government until their demands are satisfied. Such action looking toward the paralysis of government by those who have sworn to support it is unthinkable and intolerable.”

that damn teabagger FDR!!!

While it is appalling, it doesn’t make it illegal or even actionable beyond this incident.

It should be both illegal and actionable. It's appalling for them to abuse their sick time this way on OUR dime.

If I were the governor of one of these states where it is happening, I'd be looking into at least docking their pay for the days they spent at the protest.
