Fishing interests zero in on enviro's role

Posted on 02/16/2011 6:36:17 PM PST by Vob

With a single-minded commitment to catch shares, EDF since 2005 has received more than $30 million in funding from three private philanthropies, according to a report of public databases set to be published by fisheries consultant and columnist Nils Stolpe, who made his research available to the Times.

Stople reports that the largest benefactor of EDF has been the Walton Foundation, which is tied to the global retailing and commodities giant Walmart and has given EDF more than $20 million in fishery-related grants.

In addition, EDF has received more than $9 million from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation for catch share-related projects, and more than $1.5 million from the David and Lucile Packard Foundation. In years before 2005, EDF received more than $3 million from the Pew Charitable Trusts.

Together, the Walton, Moore and Packard foundations, with the Pew Charitable Trust, have made more n $480 million in grants to study and influence fisheries.

Your right. It has no link to the original article.

I am familiar with the subject. Catch Shares are a way the elitists are trying to privatize the Ocean. Here is a little background that might help:

February 16, 2011 - This week, Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) activists are visiting the offices of federal legislators claiming erroneously to represent the interests of U.S. fishing communities while selling their plan to privatize our nation's public resources in the name of conservation. According its sources, the Recreational Fishing Alliance (RFA) said EDF campaigners have been arriving in DC by plane the last few days to promote their 'Catch Share' manifesto with Members of Congress in an effort to limit overall public access to coastal fisheries.

"On February 24, 2010, a national coalition of mainstream, grassroots fishing organizations helped unite the fishing industry in a call for fisheries reform, rallying on Capitol Hill and pleading with legislators to just say 'no' to Catch Shares," said RFA Executive Director Jim Donofrio. "We had 5,000 fishermen waving flags and carrying signs at an open public protest last winter, and here it is almost a year to the day and EDF is still responding by slinking around in the shadows in Washington, pretending to represent fishermen," he said.

Here in the Boston area I have been involved in battles against these groups for the last ten years.

We have been able to fend them off in many areas but they are well staffed, have plenty of money and lawyers, and keep coming back to try to get their way.

You can beat them at a public hearing, but most of their opposition is grass roots and the people have to go back to work the next day. The Enviros are on an environmental group payroll, and can spend the workday time button holing legislators, and trying to get the Enviro agenda passed,at the expense of the working citizen.

We will fight this catch shares for recreational anglers also. Its just one of many ongoing battles.

When I sit at a table with the Enviros,I get to thinking about the young men and women who are dying for this country to protect these elitist subversives. - Tom
