Abercrombie & Fitch to Close 56 Stores

Abercrombie & Fitch has had strong financial results since mid-2010, but it was one of the slowest major retailers to respond to the new reality of the recession, and as a result its recovery lagged far behind most of its competitors.

Only 56 stores? Too bad.

Live by fads, die by fads. Too stupid to realize that in this segment there is zero customer loyalty. Loyalty is to being only what’s “cool,” and “cool” is as temporary and fleeting as the value of the nihilism and hedonism that are its traveling partners.

Not quite a way to build a business that will last.

Anything they had could be found at Goodwill for 5~10% of the price.

yep.. I would look through their store every once in a while, while I was at the mall. I never saw one darn thing for this old guy.. that booming music and the perfume in the air? yuk... Understandably, I wasn’t in their targeted demographic.

I buy my jeans at Walmart..Wrangler... great, sturdy jeans. Honestly, I can’t stand the thought of paying that much money for a shirt or a pair of jeans.

“Haven’t had any use for A&F since the stopped selling Webly and Scott shotguns.”

....not to mention that at one time they were one of the biggest sellers of Winchester Model 21s...btw, I’ve still got my Dad’s brown waxed cotton hunting coat that he bought there in before WW2.

....if I ever get to travel in a time machine, I’m going to set the dial to the 1920s-1930s with a big pocket full of cash and head to NYC....back when A&F was A&F and Brooks Brothers was Brooks Brothers.

Then came the revolution, and they went metrosexual on us, if not gay/transgendered. Too bad. They used to be kind of like Brooks Brothers was in the old days, only more so.

The fact is that the old company went bankrupt and the name was eventually sold to Limited Brands in 1988, who created the new version. For a few years they had phenomenal success with it, then spun it out as an independent company with an IPO.

The fact that they're closing 56 stores isn't particularly notable, given that they have over a thousand locations. And their sales were actually up 18% over the previous year.

A&F reinvented themselves and became a trendy campus brand. I checked out a couple of their stores, and shirts that I feared would fall apart in my hands were $75-$150. However, the college kids loved them, and they spent the money for them. The thing about campus trends, though, is they are trends, and A&F should have started reinventing itself about five years ago, if they wanted to remain relevant. The heroin chic cutting edge thing is old hat, now.

FWIW, my youngest daughter (runs a daycare now) was one of the original vampire goths. She bought a pair of Doc Martin's when the only place to get them was the Neo-Nazi stores.(basically the old hippie head shops that converted to Neo-Nazism when tie dyed T shirts quit selling.) The first time she saw a pair of Doc Martin's in a mall, she took them off and never wore them again.

Good Lord, according to that picture I can only assume disco has returned. The time for rejoice/repentance (not sure which) has arrived!

That’s a good start. May I suggest they begin with the ones in Washington state?

I’ve never purchased anything from A&F. I wasn’t raised to be brand conscious and my husband and I aren’t raising our kids to be brand conscious. I love that my kids are bargain shoppers. They know not to even ask for ridiculously priced clothes.

Loud, dark caves for teenagers. Nothing in there the adult paying for the teen clothing would wear.

When all the clothing you carry is geared to the youngest adult population who make the least money....you get less customers, as more of their extra money is now going into the gas tank and for higher food prices.
