I’m surprised it was allowed before this! No, I’m not an anti-smoking Nazi. But a submarine is a closed system and I would think that smoking would put a stressor on the system that you would want to avoid.

LOL...I had this vision appear in my head:

(Disclaimer: This is a nuclear sub in a WWII setting, so...think of the time frame juxtapositions like those found in the “Naked Gun” movies...

SETTING: USS LOS ANGELES, MOTIONLESS AT 100 FATHOMS. CREW HAS BEEN SUBMERGED FOR 47 HOURS. A ENEMY DESTROYER IS PINGING THEM REMORSELESSLY. ALL EYES IN THE SUBMARINE PEER UPWARD AT THE UNSEEN ENEMY. SWEAT RUNS DOWN THEIR FACES AS THEY GRIT THEIR TEETH.

CREWMAN 1: “I can’t take it anymore! I think I’m gonna crack if I hear one more ping!”

CREWMAN 2: “Hey. You wanna know what is gonna make me crack? The smell of stale tobacco on your frikking shirt. Of all the things in the submarine service, it is the cigarette smell on people clothes that makes me crazy.”

I was a submariner. Smoking in a sub was no big deal. But busy bodies who always want to impose their will on others are really beginning to tick me off.
