It is certainly true that Bill Buckley was no Goldwater. Goldwater was an enthusiastic cheerleader for abortion and for homosexuality. Goldwater bragged about taking his daughter Susan for an abortion and said that anyone who did not like it could kiss his ass. His first wife Peggy was for many years a member of the Board of Directors of Planned Barrenhood from approximately World War II through her death in the 1970s. Goldwater was almost never loyal to Ronald Reagan, supported Ford over Reagan in 1976 and actually made a commercial for Ford actually warning California primary voters not to let Reagan have his finger on the nuclear button. All that was missing was the little girl and the daisy and the mushroom cloud but the point was the same and it is the same Kool Aid that Paulistinians serve today. Finally, in the 1980 election, when Arizona polls showed him losing to a pro-life Democrat on the weekend before the election, he crawled to the Arizona pro-lifers promising to vote pro-life if they would change their support to him. They endorsed him and he never cast a single pro-life vote in the final six years of his career.

I've been around more than twenty years too and it is true that Buckley was no Goldwater. Bill was a whole lot better than Goldwater ever dreamed of being.
