The trailer for Atlas Shrugged Part 1 has finally been released!
“So you’re saying they should have continued working because society needs them?
Maybe they should have been compelled....you know...for the greater good”
I’m not saying anything about man’s obligation to civilization, nor to the autonomy of the individual, or anything of the sort. I’m merely saying Galt set out to collapse the U.S. economy and succeeded.
Galt DID NOT set out to collapse the economy.
He “sat out” from participating, knowing that the system they created would collapse
He did not want the system to collapse, he did not want them to create such a system that required him to be an unwilling participant.
Like forcing him to buy health insurance.
If we ALL ‘went Galt’ Obamacare would collapse- even though none of us wants that.
oh hell yeah - I completely understand how you could have dedicated your life to working under her...and it is really weird how Rand left you of all people hanging...
That is so good... can I steal it?
“Galt DID NOT set out to collapse the economy.”
Yes he did, if you presume he knew the demands of his strike would never be met. Which I do.
“He ‘sat out’ from participating, knowing that the system they created would collapse”
Exactly. Not just that, he also convinced an array of geniuses to also sit out. What’s more, his comrads, Francisco and Ragnar, engaged in active sabotage. So what’s our disagreement?
“He did not want the system to collapse, he did not want them to create such a system that required him to be an unwilling participant.”
The system requiring people to work for others against their will already existed. If not legally (that is, before Galt starts the collapse; after his plan’s in swing, the legally tyranny really takes off), in the very least morally. Galt didn’t want productive people to be moral or legal slaves, and as such set out to “stop the wheels of the world,” which inevitably must result in collapsing the system.
Galt would have been much happier not to have to do this.
Obama would be happy as a clam (are clams really all that happy?) to collapse the system.
This is what makes all the difference.
This is unlike Obama who I believe WANTS to collapse the system. But even Obama cannot collapse the system himself, he can only create a system that collapses when people ‘go Galt’.
Obama WANTS it to happen as his goal. Galt NEVER WANTED that ultimate goal, even though yes he knew it would happen.
I hope I have made my point clearer.
Like Obamacare, he was forced into a system he did not want to be a part of. So what does he do? Continue to be a slave to it?
Unlike Obama, Galt never would have set out to collapse the system on purpose.
The biggest problem I see with Hollyweird making a movie about this is that they will make Galt the bad guy
...for not capitulatiing to the will of people obama and his minions.
“Galt would have been much happier not to have to do this.”
I’d be much happier if hamburgers fell from the sky like rain.
“Galt NEVER WANTED that ultimate goal, even though yes he knew it would happen.”
I cannot reconcile these ideas. Except to say that Galt regretted having to bother. But what does that amount to? He would have regretted more doing nothing, so he collapsed the system, and that is that.
I’m not very interested in a conversation about how much satisfaction Galt got out of “creative destruction.” He could have cried himself to sleep every night for all its relevance to our argument above.
“Like Obamacare, he was forced into a system he did not want to be a part of. So what does he do? Continue to be a slave to it?”
No, he stops its wheels.
“Unlike Obama, Galt never would have set out to collapse the system on purpose.”
Yes he would. He did.
Be my guest! I wish I’d said it first! :-)
I dont know if you are trying to be ignorant now or what...
Let’s try this a different way...
and pay attention closely
Two people walk up to a closed system that is working fine.
One of them see it the way it is and is happy and it stays that way.
The other sees it and decides to change it on purpose to ruin it.
Which if these two people is the bad guy?
The first example is what Galt would have done
The second is what Obama is doing
Now the person in example one is forced to move to #2’s world, and see what is happening. It is was not his desire to change it.
That is what I would have hoped for.
It would cost an abusrd amount of money but having it animated in the style of Batman/Superman TAS would help it even more to me.
I would like to have a younger Claudia Christian as Dagny.
“I dont know if you are trying to be ignorant now or what”
Ignorant? Big words for someone missing the point of one of the simplest giant plots of American literature.
“Which if these two people is the bad guy?”
Let’s try it this way: I’m not saying Galt is the bad guy. Don’t know why you keep wanting to have a moral argument with me. Even if Galt’s the most perfect human specimen since Jesus, it doesn’t mean he didn’t collapse the U.S. economy. Because he did.
Galt’s not as great a guy as Rand thinks. He may in fact be evil, and is precisely the reason why people like Whittaker Chambers saw nascent totalitarianism behind Rand’s apparent libertarianism. But that has nothing to do with what I’ve been posting. Whether he’s good or evil, he did what I said he did. That is all.
“It is was not his desire to change it.”
I see absolutely no evidence for this. Unless you go so far as to say no one is responsible for their actions in any environment short of their perfect utopia. Whatever world they find themselves in, if it is short of paradise, they are free to correct it by whatever means necessary?
Galt found things to be bad, acted to correct what didn’t conform to his ideals, and therefore is perfectly good and innocent and true? That doesn’t follow. Sounds more like the teachings of Lenin than a libertarian or conservative.
hahahah Brilliant Marketing, Opening on Tax Day!
