What is the makeup of the population there. Are there enough, er, “committed Muslims” to pull the whole thing down into a jihadic misery?

The professional class are largely secular but do not make-up a majority in the country. However, if you walk the streets of Cairo or Alex, you will not encounter as many radical Muslims as you would in Saudi Arabia.

The bottom line is that there is no way the military will cede power to radical Muslims.
