CAIRO — Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak is to step down tonight, two sources have told NBC News, losing his 30-year grip on power after 17 days of dramatic mass uprisings across the nation.

NBC's Richard Engel reported that a high-ranking source inside the president's office said the newly appointed vice president, Omar Suleiman, would take over. This was confirmed by a second source.

Egypt's military announced on national television it had stepped in to secure the country and promised protesters calling for Mubarak's ouster that all their demands would soon be met.

I hope Mubarak stays and then institutes reforms on his own.

Anything as long as the Muslim Brotherhood does not come to rule Egypt.

He’s in a dilemma now; he made efforts to cast himself as inspiration for the demonstrators. Yet it might turn into a wave of Muslim fundamentalism.

Given that risk, he would now want to hedge until it becomes clear how this will really play out.

And who really knows? I have my own dark guess, but that is just me.

Sounds like the army has taken charge, which is hopefully bad news for the Muslim Brotherhood.

And another thread has popped up saying that Egyptian state TV is declaring that Mubarack isn’t going anywhere.

Constant confusion, rumor, and speculation.

On the whole, I prefer the military coup route — they’re the most stable and friendly faction in the country, at least of any size, and not well-disposed toward the Muslim Brotherhood.

What about the supporters of Mubarak ? Will they fight back ?
What we are seeing is the start of an islamic regime like in Iran.
The people in the square are islamists.
where are the women wanting democracy in that crowd ? the only women we see are veiled and with hatred in their eyes.
They want an islamic state and it is frightening.

The media has been lying for the last 2 weeks.

Democracy is not what they are screaming for.

They are praying for JIHAD.

Isn’t it already night in Egypt?

At any rate, maybe Mubarak and Suleiman will both quit and give the presidency to Zahi Hawass. He’s the only other Egyptian anybody else knows, aside from Omar Sharif.

If the Muslim Brotherhood takes power, US aid will cease, the tourism trade of Egypt will all but dry up and the Egyptian economy will completely tank and go into the toilet.

Mubarack may be listening to the Capones "So Long Chicago":

always feeling like i'm weak
all i can do is just grit my teeth
and if they gave me what i want
i'd still be disgruntled so what the f***
is all i can say, i change my mind every goddamn day
will i go or will i stay?
are these feelings ever gonna go away?

Crazy day with lots of rumors from that part of the world.

Early this morning, there was a rumor that King Abdullah had died.

And the Suez canal will be held hostage and likely double or triple the price of a barrel of oil.
