Faced with a revolt on the right, House Republicans scrambled Wednesday to adjust their budget strategy and come up with tens of billions of dollars in additional savings including a possible across-the-board cut to appease tea party supporters.
The day began with the once-proud House Appropriations Committee previewing what it saw as an unprecedented package of more than $40 billion in reductions from current domestic and foreign aid funding. But even as the numbers were released, conservatives at a morning caucus demanded twice the reductions. Lat year we overspent by 1.5 trillion dollars. Can you DC people do the math?”
Asking a politician to cut domestic spending is a bit like asking them to cut off their own political arm. Its hard because most all of that domestic spending ends up buying votes for them and thus indirectly their own reelection.
I’m sure they can do math, but the last and only time this federation retried its debt was in the 1830’s and it was by selling off land acquisitions. Even then it only lasted for a short time.
We should begin to accept the probability that congress is structurally incapable of maintaining a balanced budget.
