You are absolutely right about the parents. I was a teacher in public school for a few years. The most involved parents were those who's children were getting the best grades. They were always there on parent teacher conference night. The kids that were failing never had their parents show up and it was almost impossible to contact them.

From talking to people who grew up and graduated from high school in the 50’s many kids dropped out and went to work at the local factory. You can't do that anymore. If people do not have a job and are not educated they tend to commit more crimes. Are there enough jobs still out there in the trades i.e. welding, plumbing, etc. to employ the 50% or higher number of kids that are not college material? I don't know.

From what I have heard, more than 90% graduated from high school in the 50’s, not so today.

San Diego Unified is full of illegals and anchor babies who get little help from home and absorb most of the extra funds for education..plus the busing. There is an endless supply of new ones to keep the problem current. If you go to some other districts in the country..where the population is different..Asian immigrants and American’s you have over achieving schools. Reading and writing in kindergarden and white kids struggling to keep up with motivated “tiger mom” Asian kids. Kids are held back in Pre-K to make sure they can read and write when they enter K.
You aren’t going to solve this problem with more money..you can only solve it with different demographics..
