The only time you should learn a foreign language would be when you travel to a foreign Country for vacation or if you plan to stay period.
Mandatory language classes and graduation requirements including those classes really don’t accomplish much aside from providing jobs for language teachers. I think we’d be much better off having students get out of school and into life a year earlier than they do now, or at least provide the ambitious and industrious that option.
We cannot change hearts and minds if we don’t speak “their” language.

As an elective, perhaps someone could convince me this was 'culturally enlightening', as a mandatory class, it is attempted conquest.
English is and remains the language of our founding documents and the language in which the fundamental principles of our nation and culture are best understood. Even the indigenous residents were forced to learn English. People who came here learned English to become Americans.
Spanish? Arabic? Feh.
