FTA: "The White House did not know quite what to do: back the shah or seek his replacement," he wrote, warning the Obama administration not to "repeat the errors" it made by failing to back an ally facing protests.

People keep advising Obama to learn from Carter's mistakes. He has, but not in the way they mean. Obama's goal is to pick up where Carter left off, just without Carter's ineptitude. Obama is succeeding at the former, the jury is still out on the latter.

Obama’s been up and down about the situation in Egypt, and has displayed a split personality about it; never really committing one way or the other, voting “present”, that’s always worked before.
