I had always assumed that having the engines running between start up at gate and full thrust at take off was a good thing since it gave the engines time to reach operating temperatures and for anything "unusual" to show up before committing the bird and the few hundred fragile meat bags (aka "passengers") aboard to flight. It's a lot easier to abort during taxi than take off.

I'm with you.

I think I'd prefer a full warm-up and full pre-flight while stuff is actually running.
