Here in the totally Democrat-run state of IL, a 66% income tax just hit our paychecks last week. As you can imagine, anyone with any sense has spent the last week discussing to which state we should flee. My friends and I have been fantasizing about a conservative commune where everyone showers, no one would starve (because we hunt) and there is no wife-swapping. Its a fun exercise to think about. Several of us believe a solution to our partisan problems (before it descends into civil war) might just be to part ways with the American Left and set up traditional American government in the already conservative states. The first goal should be in beefing up these already rational and taxpayer-friendly states with more like-minded citizens. Too many of us are separated and living in enemy territory, forced into an ideological closet from which we dare not exit for fear of public humiliation and shunning.
Living in a solid blue state, it is nearly impossible not to have been accosted at a cocktail party while trying to enjoy some shrimp by a (literally) foaming at the mouth leftist who accidentally found out you voted for Bush. And God forbid it should be discovered you once worked for Rush Limbaugh (like me). In that scenario, not one person would come to your defense if your accuser threw you through a plate glass window. Im not a bumper sticker person (too hard to scrape off) but Ive known a few brave souls whove had their cars scratched for advertising their conservative beliefs. There must be better places to live. Ive come to the conclusion that now might be the time to start looking. The following are the best and worst places in the country for a conservative...

>But if we leave, the state become that much more liberal, leaving people we care about even more likely to be hurt by lib policies.
Leave now & prepare for CWII
Which in 08 (after voting overwhelmingly for the Agitator in Least) was named [the] "Bluest" state in the Nation
That and the fact that according to Forbes (2009) Vermont had the HIGHEST combined (personal, property and sales) TAX burden per capita in the Country.
That and we have the ONLY avowed "Commie"--Sanders--(though there are many, many, more Demo-Rats who deny they are one) in Congress, along with one of the MEANEST, NASTIEST, PARTISAN, SOB's (and that's according to his colleagues)--"Leaky" Leahy (who should still be in Leavenworth for his Treasonous Actions)and as well as the diminutive (both in size and intellect) FAR, FAR, Left, "Petey" Welch.
Of course, VT now has a new Goobernator (Shumlin) who is a full-fledged Moonbat (who wants to close down Vermont Yankee, the state's only Nuclear Facility) as well as a Legislature which is overwhelmingly, Dhimi-Crat.
I could go on and on and on, but other than being only one of 3 States with a "Right to carry" I can't think of anything else going for the Green Mountain State....and that is coming from a 67 year old who grew up here when (like so many other places) was mod-to-Conservative.
Headed to Florida next week to start looking for a place.
Have had it with Burlington--the Headquarters for the majority of Moonbats--and this Commie Republic
PS: If you like snow, COLD and Winters that are 5 months long, then you might overlook the previous shortcomings
Just had another 8" last night, to add to the 22" we had last week, piled on to who knows how much accumulated from before!
Me? I'm looking out the window and glad I don't have anywhere to go, otherwise I'd have to shovel my sidewalk and driveway again.
SUCKS, BIG TIME!!!
>It will be like science fiction (eg, Asimovs The Naked Sun) where the rural areas are slaves to the urban areas. <
That was the reason why the cities outside of Seattle-Tacoma many years ago created a referendum to call themselves cascadia for they were sick and tired of being controlled by the commie pukes who control WAshington State from Seattle.
I’m now working in L.A. and after crossing the border from Canada, it amuses me that the clerks who take my orders from Starbucks, Taco Bell, BK etc are white, especially from the border cities.
That $4.40 /gal. should have been $4.04....I remembered your thread from the other day.
Never got a reply from that FReeper who claimed to be getting it at $1.65...HAH!
It wouldn't be a "commune" but I've been searching for "FReeperville for about ten years...sigh.
Better change Florida. - you can count the number of US congress critters on one hand...
Don’t try finding any in the State houses either, unless you are here for awhile :)
Ave Maria, Florida
is “freeperville”
for those freepers
who are not anti-catholic.
I've been in Indiana for 28 yrs, having bailed out of Cleveland when Kucinich took it into default.
Things went awry here when Evan Bayh (8yrs) and his cronies Fumblebum Frank (RIP)and Niceguy Joe(8more yrs) were in charge. They used the sudden surge in gambling revenue from newly legalized casinos to unionize the state employees, pay them well, and turn them into a government lobbying force.
It took a while for this crisis in the making to become evident, but eventually things sobered up. We've had a Republican gov for 6 yrs now, and recently elected Republican majorities in the state House and Senate. Also it seems likely that Mike Pence will be the next gov of Indiana - he's a true conservative.
One of the REALLY GOOD things about Indiana is that it's a citizen legislature- these guys have to have REAL JOBS because legislature is NOT a full time job like most states.
In my experience, Indiana is the best rust belt state.
The same for Michigan once you get away from the sewer cities, it’s a damn conservative state.
“Propane cheaper than $4.40/gal?”
I think you’re being robbed. Hop over here and see what the current prices are.
I’m in southern WI, 25 miles from Madi-stan.
I am still overjoyed that we sent Russ Feingold packing, elected Scott Walker governor and took control of the state legislature.
It was a miracle. Victory was a long time coming, and we finally have hope of turning this Tax Hell around.
Cities are also trying to do a shared governance with the counties to capture the people that are leaving the city limits to get out to the ‘burbs and beyond. And with the exodus of the people goes the tax bucks — that is a huge problem for the communists so they are trying to usurp entire counties/metro areas to pay for their “compassion”.
Hey, and Mitch Daniels might be President.
10,000 KW, my Mother wasted a lot of money on my education but I am not entirely with out a clue.
You can see out the window? The snow just slid off my roof next door here in Red Hampshire, and now I can't see out the window. :-)
Enjoy Florida!
I feel for ya, man.
Before I retired, I knew I needed to get out of my propane fueled house - especially since I was going to be home during the day and not having the temp set very low.
Luckily I was able to pull this off right before the housing market tanked.
The only advice I can offer is putting in a mega size tank and buying in the summer when it’s cheaper. But you have to swallow that all in one lump payment.
Mitch is not my top pick (Pence would have been but he recently declined to get in).
But he would be a million times better than Baraq Obama.
That wasn't my intent...I am trying to indicate to other folks that this is a very expensive state to live in; and that a generator is something you are probably going to want to have handy when the power fails and the temperature in your house plummets to freezing (or worse).
