FGS, one would think that on an army base, at least the military police would be armed

I repeat, the MPs were and are armed. As are the civilian DoD police and the contract gate guards.

IIRC all have various 9mm handguns. Don't know what the cops, both MPs and civilian, have in the trunks of the police cars.

I have talked to several guys stationed there, and they have all told me that no one is armed on base except at certain times—and the MPs at the gates clearing traffic to enter.........

Ft Hood is just down the road from where I live, and I have been on the base many times
