Egypt's Mubarak 'Quits Ruling Party' (See post # 18)
news.sky.com ^ | 2-5-11

Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak has resigned as the head of the country's ruling party, according to state TV.

It also reports that the party's secretary-general Safwat el-Sharif and Gamal Mubarak, the son of Mr Mubarak, quit as a gesture to anti-government protesters.

For 12 days they have been taking part in demonstrations in Cairo and other cities demanding that the embattled president steps down.

The 82-year-old, who has been in power for 30 years, has ignored calls to give up the presidency and has previously insisted he intends to serve out the remaining seven months of his term.

Protests turned ugly earlier this week with violent street clashes between anti-government demonstrators and pro-Mubarak groups.

Earlier, opposition leaders claimed they had met with Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq to discuss various proposals that would end in the leader's departure.

One option being considered by top officials would see Mr Mubarak remaining in office purely as a figurehead, with real power draining to the vice-presidency.

The latest development may be a sign that this compromise has been reached behind closed doors - but it is questionable whether it will carry much weight with protesters.

That would preserve the regime and transfer real power to Suleiman. We should aim to preserve the regime and encourage it to make a few substantiative reforms.

Having Islamists come to power should not be America’s default option.

Dumb move. Course it’s hard to see what to do when you are in it. Reforms would have been better.

Somehow I doubt that the protestors are going to be satisfied with the VP, Suleiman- the man they tried to assassinate a few days ago- in control.

...Hussein and his cult are happy to see the KOOKS take over. They hate Israel, they hate America, and will be glad to see another enemy of capitalism and liberty in that region.

Mubarak was not a perfect ally, but he was steady.

This is all just a remake of the Carter movie by all the same scriptwriters.

Sort'a' like The Rite {Anthony Hopkins movie} that's out now is just a remake of The Exorcist

Egyptians have practiced female genital mutilation since the time of the Pharaohs and although illegal now, it continues. An ‘05 study found 95% of Egyptian women had suffered some form of genital mutilation . I really don’t give a $hit how many Egyptians kill each other as long as the canal stays unobstructed and the antiquities survive

Somehow I doubt that the protesters are going to be satisfied...

It will be a sad day indeed if Egypt, or any country for that matter, ever allows its self to be run by the demands of looting rioters in the streets of its capital city, for that is anarchy in its truest form. The existing Egyptian government must now clear Egyptian streets of protesters/looters, restore order, and make its cities and streets safe enough to conduct an orderly election.

Mubarak must now announce a national curfew and that anyone on the streets other than the unformed military and police will be shot on sight, and he must do exactly this or the Egyptian people are in for a very dismal future.

I share your sentiment. Trying to change the world is in so many ways pointless and America should jsut pull her troops home, let the world go to pieces and start being more practical about who we choose to ally ourselves with. I’m sick of having my taxmoney sent to Africa/Haiti and the rest of the planet that only demands more and more and more while spitting in our faces and attacking our citizenry. If the Egypitans CHOOSE Islam, let them suffer and I only hope that the ppyramids are preserved too.

But relying on America to make things better while doing nothing to improve themselves is SO POINTLESS.

When Tsar Nicholas II abdicated, your sentiments were the same ones expressed by his contemporaries. A lot of people thought that he was weak because it was ‘just riots,’ but it was also about a deep seated problem that had never been addressed and a group of people (this time the Muzzies, but in the past it was the Bolsheviks) were determined to overthrow the existing govenrment and have their precious revolution no matter what the cost or even if it was worth having in the first place.

Let the President abdicate and leace and let the Egyptians rot in their own mess. Let themselves get out of it if they like.

Bears repeating. Pray for America and Israel. Pray that we survive this Islamic nincompoop of a President.

Just heard the airhead on MSNBC say that NBC news is now denying that Mubarak haas resigned as head of his party.

German news has been saying the same thing. They're saying it was a false report by the news agency Al Arabia.

It was a German diplomat this morning who reported the assassination attempt that had to be taken back.

A lot of disinfrormation flying around.

You're sure right about that. This article doesn't belong in breaking news.
