OLYMPIA – A legislative hearing over a proposal to make driver’s license applicants give the state a Social Security number and a verifiable residence was abruptly halted Thursday after some members of the audience called the plan racist and anti-immigrant.
Senate Transportation Chairwoman Mary Margaret Haugen, D-Camano Island, ended the hearing when several people in the audience tried to shout her down over the purpose of Senate Bill 5407.
The panel had listened to a full hour of testimony, with some witnesses saying the bill would make the state safer by preventing terrorists from obtaining licenses and others who said it would make the state less safe because undocumented immigrants would still drive, but without licenses or insurance.
Haugen insisted several times the bill wasn’t about immigration: “To work in this country, you have to have a Social Security Number. We’re just asking for a Social Security number.”
When she asked Department of Licensing staff to explain how the bill would work, they said applicants would be asked for the number, as they are now. If there’s any question about residence, licensing staff must “establish whether they are lawfully present” in the state.
“So it is about immigration,” a member of the audience said loudly.
“You want to target brown people and the working poor,” said another, even louder.
Haugen told legislative security to remove those two people, which prompted other people to join in that the bill was targeting immigrants. She banged the gavel and adjourned the committee without getting the full answer from licensing staff or hearing testimony on three other bills.
The panel will return to the issue later, she said.
Or maybe everyone should tell the state government of Washington, when it comes to state taxes, they can kiss their asses.

Went to renew my DL in WA and somehow transposed my SS#. They came back to me and wanted ID to verify who I was.
When I moved to WA and went to the DMV I was required to prove some evidence of residency. The dork at the desk wouldn’t take the sales contract on my house as proof. I finally came up with enough proof and got my license after several minutes of debate. The line next to me was all non-english speakers who were all turning in Oregon licenses to get a WA license. I guess Oregon must give them away and with loose trade in standards in WA then these people do one switch and look legit.
If these people want a country with no laws why don’t they return home where there are no laws.Where you may pay a bribe and be on your way. They want so much to undermind the laws of this country.They are so use to the fact by saying racist, said laws do not apply to them

In California no social security number no driver’s license. Not an immigration issue but rather a welfare dead beat parent enforcement issue. Don’t pay your child support they take away your driver’s license.

Gee, when I renew my SD drivers license in a couple of months, in addition to my expiring license, I’ll have to provide:
PROOF of my SSN;
two “approved” proofs of my PHYSICAL (No, I can’t claim I live in a tiny tent in the right-rear corner of our P.O. Box) address;
and a certified copy my BIRTH CERTICATE.
(And I’m not even trying to run for President!)
When my wife renews, she’ll have to provide all of that PLUS our marriage certificate, to prove her name change.
So, what makes illegal residents of Washington so special? And, since when is criminal a “race”?
Were those “members” citizens...inquiring minds would like to know?

There are no state INCOME taxes in Washington, already. The voters basically did what you ask by a 2/3 margin last year.
Who the F#@% are these people that not only don't want to obey the laws that Americans have to, but think they are ABOVE it.
I think it would work better if you say to the officer “No habla Ingles.” Act confused and refuse to speak English, with the exception of a few words like ‘racist,’ ‘sanctuary’ and ‘ACLU lawyer.’ It should only take a couple of minutes for them to send you on your way.
