Stray Pit Bull Saves Woman, Child From Attacker

The wandering 65-pound Pit Bull mix might have seemed menacing to some passerby, but one woman will always remember him as her “guardian angel.”

The dog, which authorities think is lost and not a stray, successfully thwarted a robbery attack on a mother and her 2-year-old son, who were held at knifepoint Monday afternoon.

The Florida woman, who has been identified by authorities simply as “Angela,” was leaving a playground with her toddler son in Port Charlotte when a man approached her in the parking lot with a knife and told her not to make any noise or sudden movements.

Angela didn’t have to do either to protect herself and her child — a dog mysteriously ran to the scene and charged the man, who quickly fled.

“I don’t think the dog physically attacked the man, but he went at him and was showing signs of aggression, just baring his teeth and growling and barking. It was clear he was trying to defend this woman,” Animal Control Lt. Brian Jones told Pet Pulse.

ANY dog, ANY breed can do permanent damage to one’s face. I have never trusted strange dogs because a dog is a dog and has a job to do. Protect the pack. If I’m not a member of the pack, I expect a dog to do what God made dogs to do.

It’s when we humanize them that they become what we make them into. Whether it be the most aggressive being in the neighborhood or a substitute baby in frilly dresses and strollers.

We have a Pit Bull too. Biggest love monkey ever, but mess with the kids and you get a warning growl.

He watches sentry when they play in the yard. Best dog ever.

I have a dog that’s half Pit Bull, quarter Rottweiler and quarter Great Pyrenees. He’s a big baby who constantly sits on my wife’s and daughter’s feet. I adopted him as a puppy so he could help protect my family when I’m not home. He has a real deep sounding bark that will make someone think twice before coming into the house.

Alas...they have both past on now. Great dogs they were. Down to one rott-mix for now. Oh, and a couple of dachsy-huahuas (I don’t really consider them dogs as much as big rats).

I’ve had two pit bull experiences.

Last year an emaciated pit bull walked into our yard. It was covered scars and had damaged its hip. We kept him for two months and nursed him back to health. He was a great dog with adults, but as soon as he got near another dog or a child he attacked. We had him put down.

Two months after that, the vets office contacted us to let us know that someone had abandoned a lab puppy at his office. The puppy had lost a leg after being hit by a car. We decided to foster him and got so attached that we kept him. As he grew up he looked more and more like a pit bull. Now he’s full grown and he’s the sweetest dog we’ve ever had. He’s good with kids and other dogs. He’s protective, but not aggressive.

The lesson is that a lot of how the pit bull acts is determined by the way they’re raised.

Do a google search for Sergeant Stubby, the most decorated dog of WW1. He was a Pitbull and is on display at the Smithsonian. Pitbulls are good dogs. It’s how you raise them.

Stubby was found on the Yale campus in 1917 by John Robert Conroy. He was of unknown breed; some sources speculated that he was part Boston Terrier and part Pit Bull, while other sources state that he was in fact a pure bred Olde Boston Bulldog, and his obituary described him as a "Bull dog" (which was at the time synonymous with "American Bull Terrier" and "Pit Bull terrier").
Stubby marched with Conroy and even learned an approximate salute. When Conroy's unit shipped out to France, Stubby was smuggled aboard the transport SS Minnesota.
Stubby served with the 102nd Infantry, 26th (Yankee) Division in the trenches in France for 18 months and participated in four offensives and 17 battles. He entered combat on February 5, 1918 at Chemin des Dames, north of Soissons, and was under constant fire, day and night for over a month.
In April 1918, during a raid to take Seicheprey (Meurthe-et-Moselle), Stubby was wounded in the foreleg by the retreating Germans throwing hand grenades. He was sent to the rear for convalescence, and as he had done on the front was able to improve morale.
When he recovered from his wounds, Stubby returned to the trenches. After being gassed himself, Stubby learned to warn his unit of poison gas attacks, located wounded soldiers in no man's land, and — since he could hear the whine of incoming artillery shells before humans could — became very adept at letting his unit know when to duck for cover.
He was solely responsible for capturing a German spy in the Argonne. Following the retaking of Château-Thierry by the US, the thankful women of the town made Stubby a chamois coat on which were pinned his many medals. There is also a legend that while in Paris with Corporal Conroy, Stubby saved a young girl from being hit by a car. At the end of the war, Conroy smuggled Stubby home.

I hear you about the little dogs. My dogs are 100 to 120 pounds. The puppy is 60, but he's young yet. :)
