MOGADISHU, Somalia — Somalia's parliament overwhelmingly voted on Thursday to extend its term for another three years — despite failing to pass any laws in the last six years.

Parliament's biggest achievement so far has been refurbishing the parliament building, said legislator Abdirashid Ali. He blamed the lack of progress on insecurity; the parliament is frequently mortared by Islamist insurgents.

The parliament has also passed a budget, says Information Minister Abdulkareem Jama. Journalists have been asking for a copy for weeks but have not been able to see it.

I dunno... I would like to see our legistators spend a whole term without passing any new laws... it would save us money, prevent further erosion of liberties and generally be good for everyone.

No new laws in three years??!!! Once Obamacare is repealed or overturned by SCOTUS, can we trade our Congress for them?

I agree. At least the Somali parliament isn’t spending money it doesn’t have and giving themselves raises when the rest of the country doesn’t have jobs. Think how much better off the USA would be if no laws had been passed the past six years.

No, no, not the same ~ these guys are FABULOUS. They didn't pass any laws in 3 years.

Let's see what it will take to import a few of them ~ not just those street thugs.

I never thought I’d be holding up the Somali parliament as a model for ours.

No, they are spending your money. They are paid by the U.N., get their funds from the U.N. and are protected by foreign merceneries paid by, you guessed it.

I would think not passing any laws might incline me to vote for a politician. After all, not passing any laws is pretty much equivalent to keeping the government out of my life.

Apparently the secret is to lob mortars at them frequently.

Don't worry, ours is getting us there as fast as they can.

No new laws in ~six~ years? Wow! How do we get a Congress like that?

It's easy. Let two thirds of the country separate into independent nations. Give 95% of the remainder to Al Qaida. Give them a U.N. salary and protect them with mercenaries from the African Union.

I wish our Congress could go for years without passing any law.
