Smooth move, pediatricians. Why not at the same time it was recommended for females?

Seems to me it takes two to tango when it has to do with STDs.

Glad they finally came around to grokking that fact.

Well, the original clinical trials were all in girls and young women since the aim was cervical cancer prevention. Plus, it's technically easier to study HPV infections in females. The trials in males came later. But, yeah, the AAP is a bit late here.
